I would go with KRK over Behringer, for reliability if nothing else. No monitors at this price range are even close to perfect.

I have the 2030 Active Truth monitors. Haven't tried a lot of different monitoring gear, but they do the job for me, and are audibly better than my AT tracking headphones or home stereo speakers. The fact that you can tune them (to some extent) has helped with the (sub-optimal) room setup.
I have the 2031s. They were my first monitors and have served that purpose well (a major step up over headphones or crappy computer speakers). Rich is right - in that price range we're just picking our favorite mediocre monitor.
Like I said mine are OK for now but I will upgrade down the road for sure. To get into something you won't feel like you need to upgrade for a long time it's a pretty large jump in price (it has been a while but I seem to recall that 824's are a little over double the cost of the 2031). If you can move into that higher range great. If the 2031 is in your price range for now, it's not a bad start, based on my experience. Another option to consider is maybe get the 2031 (or the corresponding krk or whatever you prefer) used. That way you can sell them in a year or two for pretty nearly what you paid for them, whenever the time comes that you're ready to upgrade. Good luck.

Don't rule out the M-Audio Studio Monitors. I hear a lot of people on a budget like them.
Agreed. I've had horrible experiences with Berhinger's reliability.I would go with KRK over Behringer, for reliability if nothing else. No monitors at this price range are even close to perfect.
No cheap monitor is flat, but very few rooms are flat either. It took me 6 years to be happy with my Mackie HR 824 monitors.

I love KrK monitors too. I use the V88's with an unrivaled passion in the recording studio and find they translate extremely well (ask any seasoned Krk mixers out there). Each to their own i guess... imho The best studio monitor is a very subjective experience - and a substancial financial investment too.
After 5 years, I know the V88's response inside out. The best thing to do if your starting out is to monitor at same level when mixing/producing.
