I was trying to explain how we go from virtually 4 connections to just 1.

Yeah, I was just talking about that one "1/4" jack on an average onboard soundcard.

Believe me I want to flee this situation asap.

Ideally, I'd like to have a soundcard from the wizard on this site.

Hey would that have two "1/4" jacks for each channell on those shinier versions or what?

Anyway, it seems that Brandon recommended an amplifier for a microbudget and thats me to tee.

But I don't know which: a new-used soundcard, a pre-amp, or Brandons amplifier? What should I target?

I'm still gathering education before I make a decision.

Thank-you for your reply to this.

Sincerely,

Jay

You're actually going from 4 wires to three wires. The grounds are connected at the jack. By the way, if this is going into (actually out of) your regular onboard soundcard, then it is probably a 1/8" stereo jack. Somebody got on the 1/4" track topic a long time ago, but I don't think that's what you need for a onboard soundcard.

Probably, or at least a stereo connecter so you could plug in a "y" adapter.

His suggestion was for an amplifier as a stop gap meeasure since you were on the microbudget.

Almost any audio interface will have a preamp and stereo output includied. So forget about preamps. When you HAVE $100 + get yourself a real audio interface. Until then check yardsales for your amplifier thing.

Thanks everyone for posting in this thread, and sorry I've been offline for such a long time. Won't it be better to buy a couple of new powered speakers instead of buying that amp? Wouldn't that be better? I mean, if I want to use these speakers when mixing, it is quite important that they are not crappy.

But I have one more question, and it is quite a problem for me. I have one of these old types of computer screens (not flat), just the "classic" screen type. But when I place any monitors near it, the picture gets blurry and purple! I want to buy a new FLAT computer screen instead, and I really don't hope that the problem will still be there with the new one. Is it because it is an old picture tube screen?

I've seen lots of people that keep their monitors this way, very near the screen. That's how I want to place my monitors. Is that possible with a flat screen without having an effect on the picture of the screen? Maybe I need some magnetically shielded monitors? (I don't know if all studio monitors are shielded).

Thanks!

Hi,

Yes, I would suggest investing in a decent pair of monitors.

Buying an LCD screen would allow you to place the monitors close to it without stuffing up the display. Then again if you buy "shielded" monitors then you can place them near the screen you already have without any problems. It's the magnets in the speakers which cause the problem and LCD screens are not affected.

However I don't think it's a good idea to place the monitors directly either side of the screen. That's probably too close together. I doubt you'd be able to produce an accurate stereo field with them so close together.

That's my 4:53am reply. Still stuck in Sri Lanka and bored shitless...
Cheers
Sriyan

As well as anyone who can reply to me I guess.

Yeah your reply does feel essential when picturing it's suggestion but it also connotes attention to a carrot test.

Playback. I guess a skill you leave to a final stage of a mastering service.

I dunno.

No. You can't wait for mastering to find out you have phase cancellation issues. By then it's too late. Playback is constantly done during mixing, right? Once in a while, play back your mix in mono just to be sure that it doesn't sound radically different than the stereo mix. If something is missing from the mono mix you've got to go find out what's happening. I think you have got to run a thousand carrot tests to get a good mix. But for me that's the fun part.

I appreciate your help. Thanks a lot! I will find some good shielded monitors. My plan was to place them with a good space from the screen on each side so that the stereo sounds well. I didn't even know the stuff about shielding before you told me about it! I guess I still have a lot to learn.

Sri Lanka.. To me it sounds awesome! I'm just here in silly Denmark.. Nothing really happens here..
