Alesis Mixer 16T USB 2.0
As promised, once I had my hands on the new Alesis 16 track, USB 2.0 mixer, I said I would give my observations on this unit.
Simply put, it does what it says it does. It can send each track independently to a USB 2.0 device. I have the USB run into a USB hub on my 5 year old laptop. No issues. I have run the mixer with my old standby DAW, Magix Music Studio 12 (I have used various versions from V5 up to V12.). No issues. I like my Magix MS 12 because I can make it do what I want with very little fuss, and it is stable. I have also tried to run the mixer with my Cakewalk Music Creator 4. It has issues. Dropouts for one when I pushed more than 4 tracks simultaneously, (partial hardware issue.). I used WDM drivers and ASIO. The ASIO drivers from Alesis are stable. The mixer comes with Cubase LE4. I am not very familiar with this powerhouse...yet. I will be. There is more twiddling to get up and running, but in my experience, the more twiddling for configuration can sometimes mean more power under the hood in the long run. I will be working on automation and midi next, (I will have to connect my Korg Kontrol 49 and use its sliders with the Cubase DAW).
My only real issue with the mixer is the proprietary power supply. I feel that if Behringer can use the standard IEC cord for my old UB1204FX Pro, why cannot Alesis. To replace the IEC cord is cheap, readily available and a no brainer. To find a replacement for the Alesis PSU may require a bit more money and effort. Also, I like not having the power cube outside of my Behringer mixer. Less to chance on cord damage,(IEC cord is also heavier duty).
Overall I am satisfied with the unit. My purpose for this mixer was to record multiple tracks independently with the ability to work with each track separately in my DAW after. The Alesis 16 USB 2.0 does this very well.
