Default AKG C1000S confusion..

Alright so...

I check out the AKG C1000S on zzounds.com, and the reviews are absolutely awesome.

zzounds.com/item--AKGC1000S

And yet, a lot of places hate the mic.

Now while somethings work for some people and don't for others, what is the big problem?

I am getting my own home recording setup. I had a $500 budget and I purchased an AKG C1000S from eBay.

All it will be used for is vocals & guitar. Now, being a newcomer to all this, do you think I would be disappointed with the sound?

I check the reviews and it states "Best vocal mic ever", and other good responses on it, then I come here and people are saying its awful for vocals and what not.

Confused..

Keep in mind that the reviews you see on retailers sites are from those with little experience too. Granted, the C1000 might sound decent on vocals but is not even in the same league as something like this.

I've never even heard of anybody using the C1000 for vox, only instruments like acoustic guitar or drum overheads or choirs if you are going to use for vocals at all.

I think you have to take the reviews on the sellers sites with a grain of salt. The better reviews usually tell you what situation the item in question was used for. Such as the mic you are speaking of. Did the reviewers say they liked it on acoustic guitars and on vocals? Were there any mentions of other applications as well?

Try to find out as much info as you can before you buy. Think of it in regards to the planned uses you will have for the piece of gear you are considering.

See if you can find someone in your area that owns the particular item. Find out what they think. See if a local store has the item. See if they will let you try it first.

It's a lot to consider, but it will save you some money and heartbreak in the long run, I think.

tell you what - this is a good question. It's not just on the sales sites but places like harmony central, where ordinary users who don't consider themselves 'pro' put up reviews the majority love it. Makes me wonder if this isn't just a mic that has fallen out of fashion?

My $.02: Always hated it. It's so bland it makes me wonder what the hell I'm doing wrong.

I've got a pair of them and have made some decent sounding recordings of a ladies choir. Could you elaborate on what "bland" means when describing a mic ?

Producing sonically uninteresting, vaguely "blechhhy" results. Come on now, are we so PC that I can't dislike a microphone? Gimme a break.

i'm just trying to figure out whether I would like it or not. I have a very deep bassy voice and the best mic so far on it is a naiant x-q with a bit of eq boost at the top end, the Naiant is flat so I am llooking at flat or toppy mics

I might try, depending on your style, a Shure SM7 or TLM103. On a less expensive mic, the AT4040.
