Adjusting pan in song

When John Frusciante's new album came out, "The Emprean", I listened to the track "Unreachable", and I noticed that he would adjust the pan in the song so that it would kind of slide from speaker to speaker. How do you do that?

Basically you're just writing automation. Depends what recording software you're using of course but at least in my software of choice, it's pretty simple.

Just look up "Writing Automation" and add "in <software>" for w/e you're using.
