The biggest hurdle blocking great sounding recordings is usually a bad sounding band. Educate the bands you record (including your own). Read this guide:

Don't forget researching and finding a studio you can afford that fits your needs. And the decision on whether to bring in a producer or not.

I have written detailed articles on choosing the right studio before. I get so confused about what I've written about that it becomes a big blur.
