Hi, I'm new to the home recording scene but I'm trying to learn as much as I can. In ABleton Live 7, say I have a vocal audio clip of 10 seconds recorded into my session. Is there a way I could apply an effect, for example autotune, to only the first 5 seconds of that clip without using automation? Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the amazing world of Ableton, my friend... Now, for your question... go to the "sequencer" screen - that is, the screen where you see the layout of all the tracks. Have your audio track with the clip open (so you see the waveforms). Now on the right-hand side of the track, where there is all the info about that track, there is a pull-down menu that says "none" or maybe "mixer". Now drag the effect into the effect screen at the bottom (I trust you know how to do this already). Back on the track, scroll down to the name of the effect, which should now be listed in the meny, click it, and underneath should appear another scroll-down menu. There should be a bunch of options in this one having to do with the effect, including "effect on". If you select that one, a red line will appear (or will have already appeared) on the track. Now all you do is with the pencil tool (pencil symbol beside the play/stop) you toggle between effect on and effect off wherever you want the effect on or off. Hope this helps...
