The real amp is my favourite as it has clarity and isn't harsh. Worst is waves, revalver is ok. They all sound better through a real cab as far as I can tell through these monitors. Amplitube is the best sounding sim out of these with Guitar Rig coming a close second (and that may even sound better with the impulse rather then real cab).

Great test! Thanks mintcheerios

I was surprised how awful GTR3 sounded.
Favourites are 2,3,8,9,10,15 with no real order (but I'm comparing thru headphones).

It would be good to hear the amp sims with their inbuilt cabs as well.

They clearly went for that "nothing but 1-2k" sound. I'm not sure the desire for that because I know no one who wants that. That's often what you have to fight to keep out!

I considered them all to be useful tools (except the Waves GTR3). A person could do some whicked shit with all of them. To me, none of the tracks leaped out as being robo badass. It was more just an issue of character.

Some were fizzier. Some had a loose bottom end. I don't usually gravitate to either of those traits, there are certain times when I would/could.

Cool shootout!

Does the Waves GTR3 have that 1-2k thing going on all their models or just the Recto?

Brandon

That's what I think too - the shortest conclusion of this test.

My experience is that GTR3 sounds pretty awful, especially with the high gain sims. I could never figure out why everyone gave it such good reviews.

I have been using GR3 and really like it. I've been looking for a shootout like this for a long time, and this covers exactly what I've always wanted to compare.

Great Shootout!
Nicely Done.

I agree with Brandon, besides the waves stuff, all of the other tones a very useable!
I was able to identify the amplitude stuff, I don't know if it's the mic distance or the room, but you can usually pick it out of a crowd. That, by the way, is nothing against IK, still a really nice tone!
My favorite simm would still be GR3!
Damn close to the original.
You get my best shootout vote!

Good Stuff Man,
Thanks

great test I noticed the real amp and cab a/b ed against the real amp and impulse had a slight difference maybe in high end im wondering why , i used curve eq to try to match the impulse to the cab heres what i got its allways the high end i have trouble with trying to get a good guitar tone and the impulse seemed to be brighter i wonder why i know its not perfect but close
does the impulse with curve eq on it sound pretty much like the real cab?
what do you think? actually i think curve eq added too much woofy bass to it
