Default trouble revording vocals

im trying to learn how to record vocals myself,im not vocally trained so,its hard adjusting the recording levels from louder to softer singing.and not being trained my voice is a little inconsistent ,i havnt sang in my home studio before either.evrything else ive sang ons been in top knoch studios.you can get away with some home studio make shift stuff but,you cant with vocals thats for sure.well i just gave it a try,i havnt been to the studio for a couple weeks and i get better with playbacks so,i dont usually post vocals.so,im sure im gonna get the worst bash of my life on here !!!ah bash away

Kind of a Maynard thing going on in the versus, technique wise. the melodies and the phrasings are great.. really adds some demention to the over all picture..would be curious to hear it with less processing on the vocals. Being more consistant with projection and control isn't hard to learn. Theres lots of free sites online that offer exercises on it.

It sounds really good, the only thing I would criticize is to try to sound more like you,
( create your own idenity) as oppose to sounding like some other popular singer..

nice take other wise!

If you're recording vocals without any compression or limiting on the way in, the best thing I would suggest is to leave plenty of headroom (if you're recording 24bit). Try a run-through first & make sure your loudest peaks are around -9dbFS. The worst thing to be worrying about when you're trying to get a good performance is digital "overs" - it will really stunt your expression. When vocals are recorded this way, you really need to go through & automate their levels before you add compression & limiting. Many engineers also suggest doing multiple levels of compression / limiting, so you in effect imitates what happens to the signal when it is recorded with compression & limiting on the way in. This creates a situation where each effect works more gently, rather than just using one stage that compresses like hell & destroys the tone of the vocal.. or if you've got spare 1000's of $ you could just by yourself a really nice
LA2A or Distressor & stick it in the signal path on the way in.
Actually, level-wise, your vocals are not to bad, but they are a little low in the mix. I think you've overdone the processing on them too... I don't mind the distortion effect, but the pitch-correction thingy is awful - IMO the last thing we need is another song with that effect on it. After all, it sounds like you can sing in tune just fine, so why use it? It's completely superfluous to your mix.
BTW, I enjoyed the song (but not the snare sound) - the arrangement is very good - especially when the drums go nuts at the end... Good luck finding a real drummer who can play that!

by reading your post i was preparing myself for the worst, but in listening i was shocked, yes your vox sound either over compressed or over proccessed however u want to interpert it. vocally your strong, they do need to come up out of the mix, even some touches of eq will bring them out, but draw back on the compression. some home studio tricks for voxs are as simple as placing a thick blanket about a foot behind your mic. keep up the good work.

As others have stated- a bit tooo over-processed- I'm also going to hazard a guess based on the style that you're right up on top of the mic... which adds to signal peak woes but also adds proximity effect which may be aggravating your efforts-

The blanket suggestion is a god one especially ify our facing into a bedroom wall and if you're standing where you're up against another bare wall, a blanket behind may also be worth trying- as to mic positioning I tell folks to place the palm of their hand over their mouth, raise their arm up so the elbow touches the mic- this is as close as you're allowed!

you have a nice emotive feel, don't kill it with fx!~
