Default New gear, New experiments. Should I put my wallet away?

There are a billion things I want to say with this one. I wish the band would have played tighter because I have some robo drum editing left to do. We also want to record another guitar track. This is one guitar, two different mics panned left and right and it came off a bit wimpy/phasey.

New Gear-

Purple Odd eq,
Api550b eq,
Shadow hills mono gama mic pre. Vox (didn't have it until tracking vox)

Experiments-

Used analog compressors as mic pre's

Wavesmaxxbcl, Snare, Bass guitar
manley variable-mu, O.H.s, guitar
distressors- sub kick
La-610- Kick beater.

The only thing on this recording that used my mackie vls pres was the toms I am not happy with them.

I am very happy how the sounds stay focused and are not competing with each other nearly as much as they usually do for me.

Am I dreaming in technicolor? Should I have put my wallet away?

2nd file is updated mix

The first thing I noticed was a clicky wet riff with frett buzz. The timing is pretty bad on this. There is lots of editing work here.
Hi hats sound funny in the intro(too wet)

It sounds like they had a bad headphone tracking mix or they were drunk.

I think the SOUNDS you have are pretty good so far except for the performace which is a HUGE part of the puzzle.

I would chose some better snare/kik samples when you get closer to a final mix at 4:35 that snare sounds funky.

There is monumental drum fixes to be done here.

The toms sound there is too much low mid muck.

The vocals sound ok but not full and clear yet.

The bass needs to come up a bit, maybe that will mask some bad timing.

A lot of guys on here leave the bass low in their mixes because they can't get the kik to punch through the low mid bass mud.Just have to eq that bass better- selective frequencys.

If you engineered/produced this take more time getting the headphone mix perfect next time. This is big part in getting a good performance from the musicians

I would have wanted a better performance from them,a job that starts well usually ends well........OH well.......

This kind of band/mixing job I would have passed on.
I pick my projects now,not just take anything that comes my way.
My rep is more important to me than a few bucks at this point.

I am just being picky,cause I care.
Your stuff always turns out great in the end,so I'm sure you will have this sounding awesome soon.

Get to work on those edits,if you start now you should be done by Christmas.JK

Nice sounds - shame about the band! Actually, they sound like quite talented
individuals, just not very good as a band... (oh, wait, I just got to the guitar solo - man, Tom Morello has a lot to answer for!).

Basically, Rockerdude has covered it all - just wanted to add that the snare's not working well, sounds a bit "robotic" like a single sample or something. The bass player sounds like he's playing everything up on the 22nd fret - I read somewhere that this is how the bassist from the Kings Of Leon plays, so the guy who mixed their album supplements the bass by generating a synth sub-bass tone to fill out the bottom end - could do the trick here... Ultimately, I think the best solution would be to give these boys a good solid week's pre-production work to help them start playing together, & then go in & record it.

Hey thanks for the responses guy's.

They practiced and practiced. The head phone mixes where solid. They are good musicians but not even one can hear timing issues until it is far gone. Granted this is there worst timing offense of all of there songs thus far.

I thought the buzzy bass and it's tone were cool. The guys in the band are going for that high bass tone that then feels like relief when he finally starts playing low. I am going try that "Kings of Leon" trick though.

I hear you both about the snare I will have another look at that. It is a single sample and a dynamic sample for the faster snare fills. In their other stuff there was no sampling but the drums hits where really all over the place on this one.

Hats in the intro-that is the room mic's. I will automate those down(opps)

Much appreciated gentlemen
Thanks again.

I had the same problem with a high bass part.Re-amp the bass track through a nice bass amp and throw that subkik and a 421 on it and there is a nice killer bass tone.

HAHAHAHA. When I recorded it I used a wunder CM7, 421 and subkick. I axed the 421 and subkick. The Cm7 made it sound like it did in the room. I may ultra compress and narrow the band width on the sub kick and slip it under the parts where he is playing high though.

Thanks RD

With those kille eq's you have you should be able to knotch that out.

I use a podxt bass sometimes through a Avalon U5 or just the Avalon U5.

That bass podxt has some pretty killer bass tones and effects.I got it for 100.00 on ebay. Some say cheesy, but I get some nice bass tones.

It's just another tool in the tool shed.

How do you like the API 550?

API 550b. It is awesome. Same with the purple odd. 2 different animals though. Adding in a bit of transformer grit for the 550b can be cool. The fact that they don't get shrill is awesome. The odd has unbelievable highs.

Starting to bash this one into shape. Did a bit of drum editing I'm not sure how far I'll take it. The phone mixes where great this is how the band has played live for 2 yrs. Added another guitar. The band wants to have the bass as the center piece. There are still a bunch of fx to add to the guitar on the left side. I added a bass tone to the high notes as much as possible with out being heard(Thanks fhumble fhingaz). The snare is not a sample anymore. The kick is for the beater sound the rest is the subkick.

Cheers
trip 9's

P.S.Song added to the original post.
