Hey everyone, please bash. This is the first thing I've ever recorded. It's just a couple of verses of
Isis - False Light, off Oceanic. I just bought an interface, monitors and a mic. Using 2 separate tracks of guitar cab miced with SM57, DI Bass with Amplitube, and EZdrummer Drumkit From Hell drums, all on Cubase LE4.
What I can gather that needs bashing so far:
- The guitars are too mid-scooped sounding. My amp sounds nothing like this in the room, but I think I'll have to re-EQ it for recording (I though SM57s
emphasised mids?). I could also play around with repositioning the mic, or look into getting a condenser for picking up the room sound. It' currently pointing at the cone, about 30* off-axis, about 1 inch from the grille. Room is in no way acoustically treated. I find I get too much fizz if it's pointing straight. I already boosted both guitars significantly at 800Hz. I'm a little bit noobish at a non-graphic EQ

I am happy that they at least sound, well, 'big'.
- While I'm impressed with EZrummer's natural sound, I've never done MIDI sequencing, so a couple of bits sound slightly awkward.
- I wish I could sing (or in the case of Isis - yell), I'd do some vocals. Actually, I can't play bass either. I just bought one to record with haha.
I'm sure there are plenty of other things that a better trained ear could pick up. I'm not the sort to get all BAAAWWW at criticism, so bash ruthlessly.
