Default Cool or stupid snare sound?

I started a project recording a 15 year old girl with a hell of a set of pipes. We are doing an electronic, acoustic with some over tones of rock type style. This is a demo just so we can here the song and get a feel for the arrangement. I recorded the drums acoustically and replaced the snare and kick with electronic ones. I thought the mix of electronic and acoustic was cool especially on the snare. I would love feedback on this though because sometimes I dream in technicolor. The rest is all cheezy cubase keys and guitar sim etc.

I didn't love the snare. It's the single distracting element in the otherwise beautiful arrangement. Part of it is it's too loud. I'd keep looking for a snarish electro sound. On the fence with the woodblock, esp. when it's not in time with the rest. Maybe more reverb on the woodblock only to soften and widen it some.

Paul, could you PM what you wrote (if you got it)? My ISP's email server has been
down since then. I'm dying with anticipation.

dont like the bass or the snare. i think something more standard sounding would be tons better - everything else is very good!

Hey GB

Thanks for the response. Darn I was hoping this was the best thing since sliced bread. With regards to the wood block I am not sure either. I will have to do more then wish to become a better drummer.

Yeah I am trying to keep it out of being a rockish ballad. The other songs we have done are more electronic and I was hoping to keep the element alive in this one. It is really easy for me to go really too rock with something like this. I will post a sample of another work so you know what I mean.

In my listening environment the kick is more out of place than the snare.

I'm all for using electronic sounds in such productions, but something sounds forced about the kick and the snare in this one. Some of that could be the LOUD nature of both of them. The snare definitely fights with the vocal at times.

I suspect there are timing issues with the kick / snare as well especially in the beginning. Something is fighting with the groove a bit.

I agree on the kick being out of place. When I went through all of my samples (which isn't a ton) anything that sounded remotely natural just sounded like a kick and I may as well use what I recorded. This was less natural but yeah I need a better sample.

HAHAHA yeah volumes, eq, compression have not happened

I used PT quantize on the O'H's Kick and Snare but not on the room mic's. So are you complaining about the tracks wandering from each other or poor drumming etc or bad choice of beat to play. The volume ratio between O.H's and room mic's is about 70% O.H's and 30% room mic's

IMHO, the song doesn't sound like an "electronic, acoustic" song. Its sounds like an acoustic rock song with some strings layered in the background. There really isn't much "electronic" in it. Not really feelin the drums too much. The acoustic guitar sounds good, along with the vocals. the baseline is kind of plain but goes with the song. I think you have a good start. With some changes, you might have something there.

not bad...

Here is the music from another one we did that is totally electronic except the bass. I'm having cubase issue's today or it would have had vox on it. Maybe I am fighting the song or I am outsmarting myself. Maybe this sample will give context to the first post.
