I'm back again with another attempt at getting my desired tone, which is still not there but I'm getting closer. Just wanted to know what the opinion is of someone with a fresh set of ears. The riff itself and drum track are very simple but my focus was more on trying to achieve a nice full distorted guitar sound. Let me know what you think, thanks!

| Haha, well I think you're being way too nice by comparing it to Nickelback buy hey, I'll take the compliment! I did try to use less gain on this one while still getting a fat sound. I think I had the gain at about half way.

Sounds good to me. I think that the bass is a major part of getting a good solid heavy tone, and I think that can be often overlooked. You did a nice job of balancing it out. Quote:

| Thanks for taking a listen! I used my Peavey Vypyr 30 close mic'ed with an Audix f50 that was slightly off axis. I actually think I might like the Audix over my SM57, at least in this application. My interface is a Presonus Audiobox USB.

Did you mic where the cone meets the speaker or somewhere else completely? Im trying to fix my tone and yours sounds like what im going for so any help would be much appreciated. What was done in post?

| Trying to remember what I did on that - I believe I had the mic right in between the cone and the edge of the speaker. And it was close mic'ed. As far as post goes, just a noise gate for hum cuz the preamp was up all the way, my amp volume was very low when I recorded that. I recorded 4 separate tracks of the exact same riff, 2 hard panned left, 2 hard panned right. No eq or effects or anything. I try to live by something I heard on this site one time - that you shouldn't have to eq in post very much at all, get the right sound at the source first and then record.

Interesting, Ive been running my amp at 10 to get the full tone but i still seem to be getting a thin sound, i have eq'd the mics slightly after the fact but i think im going to rerecord and try what you did, maybe experiment a bit, instead of using a 3 mic setup as I am now. As I stand in the room and listen to the amp, it sounds stellar, best Ive heard it but I just cant seem to translate that into the recording.
