Default X-men Theme

So, I was bored today, and decided to record my interpretation of the X-men cartoon theme.

As usual, I don't really know what i'm looking for when it comes to mixing it, so I just brought up a limiter, compressor and EQ plugin, and fiddled about with them for a while.

Bash, please!

Beginners often have this problem because they think there is some kind of standard or code that has to be followed. The ONLY thing to look for is whatever satisfies your creative vision.

So whatever you had in mind when you tracked the song should be finalized during mixing. Mixing is about achieving a creative vision of some kind.

The low end may be getting just a hair muddy in spots, but it's not too bad.

I'm not sure about the real theme (that was my brother's show and I barely remember it) but the lead thing is quite dominating. If it were me, I think the extra strings and such in the background could really add something. That's entirely subjective though.

While I realise there isn't a specific code for mixing and all that, I just don't know how to get from my recorded tracks, to the finished product I hear in my mind, as it were.

I can listen to that mix and go "yeh, I did a good job on that", but then listen to a recording of one of my favourite bands, and realise that the mix was actually pretty bad.

I gues i'm just bad at spotting the problems the occur, because i'm there going "this is the most awesome mix in the WORLD!", when really I should be going "this is awful, what can I do to improve it?".

In terms of that actuall piece of music, the original theme song recording is muddy and full of sound effects, so I took the main bits of it, and then added more metal!

Years ago I started taking mixes I liked and dissecting them into 5 frequency bands.

Lows / Low-mids / Mids / High-mids / Highs

There are a lot of multi-band compressor plugins that let you solo these bands.

I would A/B each frequency band from a pro mix against my own mixes and it was really depressing how distant I was. It was a lot easier to pinpoint where my problems were when I could narrow the playing field.

If you haven't tried it it might be worth a shot. I wouldn't worry about trying to achieve the volume of a mastered CD, just the balance.

Ok, that's given me some food-for-though. Are there any ones you would reccommend? I just recently downloaded all the antress stuff, but when they've all got different names, I can never be bothered to go through them all and see what they do.

I'm assuming in the plugin, it'll be easy to work out how to solo specific bands. I know I can on the cubase one, but there's only four-bands, and I tend to stay away from it. Is the cubase EQ any good? I'm using AI4 if that makes much difference.
