Default Recording levels: high and low gain for Electronic Keyboard modules

I would like to know what should be the low gain and high gain decibel settings when recording Instrumental audio. I have an arranger keyboards (GEM) and Roland JV-1080 synth module.

I record about 7 to 10 tracks at once. The main ones being the Percussion (Drums), Bass, Accomp, Instrumental leads and pads.

If I set the low gain to 0 db the result is a bit too bassy. I listen to the audio thru my M-Audio studio monitors and my Sennheisser HD515. Once I record it, i listen for the final test on my Home Theatre audio equipment.

Any ideas or suggestions?

My recording is done on my laptop via, USB using Lexicon-Pro.

thanks

Are you using a sequencer to record multiple tracks all at once? I record with hard disc recorders (not computers). Perhaps my input/VU meters are not accurate, but sometimes I exceed 0 dB & nothing clips, and it sounds good. Other times, I am a few dB's under 0 dB and I hear what sounds like some type of undesirable distortion, so I lower the input levels. Sometimes I just go with what sounds best regardless of what the meters say.
