I use the Aphex 460 multi pattern tube condenser mic that i bought for around $300.00,it has 9 polar patterns, quite comparible to the old telefunken tube mic that is in the $1500 price range, great for vocals and acoustic guitar, there also is some guy on the net that will modify the Aphex 460 to sound like a Neumann U87 and claims to use the same components.. I'd go with the SM58 for anything that's live.. whether it's to do with singing, or even making announcements as a DJ.. nothing beats that in terms of sound, ruggedness, etc. However, when it comes to recording, i've graduated to an economical but sweet piece - the Behringer B2 Pro. When you can't afford to invest in an AKG or Rode, or Neumann or others, i guess it makes a decent buy. |

I've used my NT1A for male vocal with great success. It has a very nice mid-range fullness, almost like a ribbon mic. I'm still trying to find the right mic (that I can afford) for female vocal without processing the signal to death. I'm just not happy with anything I own. jcl |

I've been using a TLM103 through an Avalon VT-737sp with much success. Just got a killer deal on a TLM149 and u87 but haven't had a chance to use them yet. I'm sure they will blow me away. I'm a mic nut and have several others lined up to test...Rode NTK, Shure KSM32, a few AKG 414's. Just got a Royer 121 to try on guitars. Don't hate me guys, I make a lot of cash with my IT gig. |

Shure's SM57 and SM58 are good, rugged standards. I have a Rode NT-1-A that seems good but I have not much used yet. I am very happy with the Schoep CMC64 card. For a large group, DPA 4006 TL with the Schoeps in an XY, DPA's in an AB. In the field for rough and ready, Shure's SM57/58 cannot be beat. |
