For those newbies in a budget an inexpensive Mic (about 20 USD as of 7/4/2009) is the Ultravoice Behringer dynamic vocal Microphone XM8500
Some people compare it to the Shure SM58 worth aobut (100 USD).
I am not an expert but I have both mics (XM8500 and SM58) and i can tell you that the XM8500 is worth every penny (and so is the SM58 don't get me wrong).
I am sure the XM8500 will be of use somewhere in your mixes.
A clear mic with a good output it seems a little more loud than the SM58 but maybe it's just how I see it.
If I didn't buy it i would not believe it, get it and you'll see what I am talking about.
I Do NOT work for Behringer or sell Mics or music instruments.

for live vocals, i've always loved sennheiser wireless mics

just bought a new 935g2 and love the fact that the batterys last more than a show! sounds good... and my real love for wireless mics, i can go to the bar mid-song and get a pint without tripping everyone over!

My Rode K2 is my favorite vocal mic. When teamed with LA710 or Amek 9098pre I can get good results with Male or female vocals. Has anyone tried the new 3 Zigma modular mics?

mxl 990 - our church uses them for all vocals -
mxl 991 and mxl 993 are worth considering too

I use the Blue Baby Bottle Mic. I love it, really good for picking up mids.

It works great for some voices on some songs and I've had songs where it just wasn't the right choice. Same for the Blue Bluebird.

Same for the SM57.

Same for my Octava MK319.

Same for all of the choices I have available.

For me, right now, it is dependent upon what I am looking for sound-wise from the vocals for a given song. Of course, there are times I really have no true idea and have to just check out what I'm getting and see if it fits...

Good thing for options in this case.

Sontronics stc-80. Dynamic. Used it on a "honky" muddy system.the stc didn't cut through, it glid. Superb fidelity.

Also, sm57 for the nostalgia it's tone evokes. With a super preamp, it sounds like a vintage ribbon. Wonderful!

For a reasonable priced microphone that is up there with the best of them check out the BeesNeez Araballa. Amazing for the price!

Know a semipro singer. He swears by mxl 990 which he owns.
Our church uses them too and they sound good.
$49.95 regular price. $39 on sale plus free cable!
Can't beat the value for the performance/cost.

You must already have sm57 on the list.

Google should turn up a lot of the lesser known ones.

Question - how do you tell all the same Chinese mikes with different sellers labels on them apart? Is there really a difference except for price?
