Although I would use these for many purposes I think you should include the Sennheiser 421 and the AKG 414. The EX RE 410 does
a good job as well and is only slightly more expensive that a SM57 or SM58. Of course the "best" or favorite" mic would be the one that get's the results you desire and that would be a subjective choice both personally and technically. IMHO FWIW

You have to go with the Sure SM7B. Its only $350 and is an industry standard. Michael Jackson used it for Thriller. THRILLER man... Thriller.

I do quite agree about the apex 460 mic.

Of course if you have a large enough Mic collection it would be best to pick the right mic for the right voice. But if you had to choose one vocal mic, the SM7B is the way to go. Especially for the price for $350. I spent some time interning at a major studio in LA and the SM7B was the most popular vocal mic used. And the producers even had the option of using vintage Neumans.

the rode ntk with a voicemaster pro pre amp.i get great sounding vocals with this

I like to use the mxl990 it is good quality and affordable. the soud is awesome.

I have 2 Oktava Mk319's I got off ebay for under a $100 each..so far so good. hope to use them as overheads at some point too..
