In business you make yourself in demand. If you believe there will be less work for mix engineers you need to be more specialized and find your niche clients. Take polaroid camera's for example. They haven't been made in the good old fashioned way for a few years. A small go getter company picked up the factory and the rights to make the film on the cheap. They will be selling to an enthusiastic and ever smaller group of customers as time goes on. As I understand it they are doing well.

There are successful engineer's in every market you just need to know how each market whim is an opportunity. For example as home recording grows cheaper and better more people do it themselves. This likely means that there are more people playing and recording music. This also means that there are a few who realize that they need help. They can do a portion of the recording and so can you. My studio time is filled with projects like this. People getting me to mix, master or record voice over guitar or rap beats they have. Some times they just need drums. Some of the time they hear the difference and then bring all there big projects to me and do all or part of there small ones at home.

Hope this helps
