Default Where To Find Rockwool, Roxul, and Owens Corning 703

I get frequently asked about where to find the "real" stuff for acoustic treatment as opposed to the ineffective myth stuff like egg crate foam and such.

I bought bought my 4lb Roxul by looking in the phone book for "industrial insulation" suppliers in the yellow pages. A local place had it and I bought a truckload. This was MUCH cheaper than buying acoustical product websites online.

If you have a choice between Roxul or Owens Corning 703, I'd highly recommend you go with 703 just because you can actually touch the stuff without wishing you were dead. I can't say the same about Roxul. The stuff DEFINITELY works, but I wrap myself up like I'm going into Nagasaki back in '45 before touching the stuff.

I also highly recommend the 4" stuff. 2" ain't bad, but it doesn't absorb nearly as low as the 4" variety and you really can't get enough absorption in the lower frequencies.

Haha that bad huh. Good to know.

Which do you prefer Rockwool or OC703 between the two?

I had to order my 703. Couldn't get it locally where I live.

I prefer 703 for the reasons Brandon stated.

Check it out above. Their absorption coefficients are very very close, but 703 is so much easier to deal with.

do the oc products have a paperback? ive heard if u take the insulation and have some facing out and some faced with the paper side out it helps with absorbtion of different frequencies? is this correct? also does any1 have any scretches or blueprints to build a "pop up" vocal booth? I want something that i can put up and take down fairly simple, also i would like to set it up in the corner of my room. im looking something in the lines of 3ft wide x 7ft tall nothing too crazy just simple but efficient! thanks in advance

You really don't want to go any denser than 4lbs per cubic foot. (I'm assuming 705 is denser, but this is just a blind guess.) Anything denser than 4lb / per cubic foot ends being too dense and starts to reflect sound instead of absorbing it.

I'm building an isolated guitar cabinet to get the cranked tone at manageable volumes. I was going to go with soundproofing foam but I guess going the insulation route is better... I just picked up my Eminence Cannabis Rex speaker... can't wait to get started on construction. If I can get to around 70 dB i shouldn't be bothering my neighbours at all.

OC 705 is twice as absorbant as 703. Heres some tests showing that 705 is the way to go over 703. Rigid fiberglass density tests

After doing a fair amount of research into this I used 705 in my place and the results were amazing. I also use an audio correction plug called ARC by IK Multimedia. Ive heard a lot of negative things being said about the app, especially by guys like Ethan, and I only have one thing good to say about it "It works" for me. Use it to help you position your traps and speakers and get the room as close to linear as you can and then use the plug to fix the rest.

In Canada, OFI-48 is the same as OC 703 and should be easier to find.

I recently found out (the expensive way) rigid fiberglass is better than foam. Its at least twice as effective for around the same price and is actually easier to mount on walls and ceilings.

If you're in the San Francisco Bay Area you can get OC703 for a good price from MacArthur Co in Oakland.

I use the Knaupf equivilent of oc703, and it is identical. Its about $12.80 for a 2ftx4ftx2in board here in the phoenix area. I have treated many commercial spaces being used as churches with this stuff. Its easy to work with and build/wrap to make look nice if it iw gonna pe in plain sight.

    Current quotes from SPI Austin:
    OC 703 2"x24x48 $12.77 per panel

    OC 705 2"x24x48 $17.77 per panel

Not great, but not bad. I will probably be getting some.

There is 7 1/4" thick Roxul being carried by Lowes now, they'll ship it to any of their locations for free when you buy it online. Seems like it should absorb really low, especially if used some inches off the wall. Only ~$40 for ~30 sq feet. They also carry other thickness but 7 1/4" is their thickest. Cant wait till i get mine, i got 12 15x47 panels, should help with standing waves in my room.

Anyone know a local seller of Owens Corning 703 within 200 miles of Philadelphia?

    Thanks,

In the Boston area and most of New England, Kamco is the best place to go for 703. Last time I bought some it was around $90 for 12 pieces of 2" 24"x48" which is half the price of everywhere else that I have looked. This package is 24x24x48 and can not be put into the backseat of an Accord. Have it delivered or get a van. (ZipVans ROCK!)

Update: Just purchased another box of 703 on Friday and the price was $98 plus tax. I realize that I was getting a bulk discount before as an acoustics contractor...
