Brandon- When I said running over 12 I meant I don't have over 12 tracks capturing at the same time. My projects usually get between 20 and 30 tracks for my rock bands. Thats with out all the sound effect and midi tracks they want too. I'm guessing the 50 you were talking about wasn't 50 incoming tracks but 50 total...?

The most tracks I have ever had in a track using Sonic Foundry software was 37. It was with a older computer I was using that was only PII 300....lots of ram and nothing else running to be able to render..LOL!! The track was a Madonna remix that did in 2002.....and I rap on the mix...wow that sounds scary doesn't it. If you wondering what the hell I was doing it for.. well it was for a remix contest. I used to do those alot....Madonna, Jackel, Tommy Lee, Lenny Kravitz, Garbage, and more... I did some good stuff that no one will ever really get enjoy......I thought you know this shit takes alot of time.....what about spending time on my own stuff.

For stuff that doesn't use MIDI (which is virtually everything I record at work) I use ProTools HD on a G5 (and often mix on my Powerbook which runs PTLE). I like Pro-Tools, but if I was paying for the software/hardware out of my pocket, it wouldn't be what I'd be using. Digi gouge you for everything, as does one of the most popular plugin suppliers (Waves) and in many ways, its very inflexible. I hate that half of my plugins can't be applied in real time.

For stuff that does use MIDI I use Cubase SX on a P4 PC. I got frustrated with Cubase on my Powerbook - my favourite (free) plugins and VSTi's are not available on the Apple platform, and I also found some performance issues on my Powerbook.

At home, where most of my MIDI stuff and composition gets done, I use Cubase 5 on my PC laptop which works well as long as I don't try too many VST instruments... my laptop is severely underpowered (its quite old) but does run MIDI stuff smoothly and gives me 16 tracks of audio with as many effects as I need before it starts giving me problems. I usually run submixes in different arrangements to get over any track limitation problems. It's a fine tool for composition.

We have Digitial Performer here which I can't get my head around... okay, I haven't used it very much, but it certainly doesn't seem intuitive to me like Cubase does. I've used trials of Sonar which I also didn't like. I've never used Logic.

I would enjoy pro because of its capability to run more tracks, but I'm not running over 12 yet anyway so its not a big deal.
If you don't qualify for educational discount, your licence agreement is invalid... you might as well have downloaded a good crack for free! (and no, I'm not suggesting that this is a good idea)
