Default what are you running on your DAW? for software?

who uses what to record?

would you guys be willing to go in depth with your thoughts on it all?

why do you use it?

how do you like it?

what will you use next do you think?

myself i use Tracktion 2 and Garage band

Tracktion was cheaper than most of the other programs out there in its leage and has great suport and uses a lot less CPU than others with the same amount of power!

garage band is just kinda fun and came with my computer thats all i know about it.

I use Sonic Foundry Vegas Video 3.0 of all things. I tried Cubase and Nuendo...I couldn't find a reason to switch.

We use Logic 7 Express at the moment. It is working great, plugins and all are amazing and it's all we need. PRO might be fun but it is not a necesity at all.

I think these "lower end" programs are totally adequate for making great records. They do everything that I need.

I can't justify the expense and learning curve of Pro Tools and Nuendo.

I wish the price was lower end...I have a couple thousand dollars tied up in software. i would call the stuff pro-sumer because of features and the quality of end product.

I guess that is low end compared to a Pro Tools/HD core system. You can get Pro Tools M-Power (LE) software for well under $500, but you are very limited to what hardware you use...... I don't know anyone who is using the LE stuff, might be cool but I don't have the time to learn something new........

I kind of feel like this.... Most of these programs are all so similar it's stupid... also, what computer platform they run on is mostly irrelevant... some MAY supposedly sound a bit better BUT it's all about what program suits you and your work flow and how you think. I think PT is the easiest one out there for editing and mixing multitrack.. however I am rarely using it because it seriously lacks the tools I need for composition. I used Logic for a while but never could get it so what good did all that environment stuff do me? NONE. It really doesn't matter as long as you "get" the tools you are working with, can work intuitively, don't need to constantly cuss at the computer and ENJOY the process... don't forget the ability to use it to compete commercially if that's what you do....

Features really don't mean shit unless you need them or know how to take advantage of them. Hardware is a different thing. They all seem to be pretty decent compared to 10 years ago but there is still a wide gap in terms of how good they are... even some of the low end hardware of today sounds great compared to the hi end hardware of 10 years ago... and don't forget, that didn't keep them from making albums... It's really hard to go wrong these days... the one caveat being with all these different packages, it's becoming harder for software developers to maintaing compatibility with their products with all these different apps...

Dach- sorry to hear logic wasn't good for you, but thats really what its about isn't it? Who needs all these plug-ins and what not, You can get most of the really simple ones that come with plug-ins for free anyway... If you look hard enough. Oh, and most of those demos for plug-ins actually work as well as the real thing as long as they aren't that "ends in 15 days" crap. I use logic cause I run off a mac and have been for my life basically. I've been forced to work with other things that mac takes it into there hands to customize so logic comes pretty easily to me. Also I got express which is something like 300 bux compared to pros 1000 bux. And I got it shipped to my a college office of someone I know so I got it for half off because of "educational prices". $150 for a damn good program sounds like a good deal to me! I would enjoy pro because of its capability to run more tracks, but I'm not running over 12 yet anyway so its not a big deal.

Must be nice. I've had several projects where I've been in the 50s lately.

Snoopy, you are right. "Prosumer" is a more appropriate term. I've shifted my brain to think in terms of mega pro stuff. After buying my Soundelux mic, I don't think I'm going back to anything cheap anymore. I get people who say "ooohhhhh... The Mackie HR824s!!!!". Then I say in a monotone voice "they are okay" (I sound like Ben Stein). I really want some ADAMs $5,000 monitors that a lot of the big boys are loving.

I'm convinced that no one piece of software sounds any better in terms of sound quality so the issue is 100% workflow and features. I guess Vegas would sound like shit to a guy needing a sequencer since it has no sequencer. It doesn't matter about floating bit depth niner this or digital something or other that if you can't automate the Aux send.

Wait till you are confident your room is the best it can be and you "know it"... otherwise you are just going to hear 4000 more dollars of wrongness....
