Default What if... You only had 4 plugin VST's? Which ones would you use?

I'd like to add another thread to go with Brandon's 'What's your favorite FREE plugin...'

I looked through that thread, and have downloaded some, but... I'd like to trim the list down some. I know I could try them all, but truly, I'm not sure being a newbie that I would pick the good ones. So...

If you had your DAW, and only 5 plugins, free or otherwise, which ones would you take? Lets say in this category:

Limiting
Compression
Reverb
Synth
????

--- Forgot to add, which VST would you pick? Which 4 or 5 in those categories...

I know this may be real old hat to many of you, but it sure has been a big issue for me. And others I'm sure. I have Cubase LE 4, and I have not doubt that if I had a full version of a package, the VST's that came with it would be fine, but again, what would you pick?

Thanks
Saddle

Compressor / Limiter
Reverb
Guitar Amp Emulator
EQ
Perhaps some kind of quality Piano/Keyboard emulator (if that counts)

Sorry, I forgot to add, which VST's would you use in those categories? Brand, free or $$...

Thanks

I'm still kind of a novice at Recording (which is why I'm here.. heh heh)...
So I don't know enough yet to make a 'final' decision on which brands I'd choose.

The IK Multimedia stuff has been sounding 'good' to my ears, but I haven't really explored it enough to give a comprehensive review of it.

This is for both their T-Racks stuff (Compression, etc) and their Guitar Emulator.

I also really like Guitar Rig, especially for the spacey effects stuff.

Reverb is the tough one. I've been swimming neck deep in information about what makes a good reverb, that frankly, I'm overwhelmed.

Sorry I couldn't be more specific.

I would probably have to go for Kore-2 (With the Hardware), Omnisphere (with the latest patch update), Melodyne DNA and Ampeg SVX (which in most instances sounds better than the real amp IMO and is great on drums and Rhodes as well) but boy......... to limit the list to only four !!!! We could go on and on about some of the other hotties out there, but....... BTW, this is my first post. It's nice to be on ! Thanks ! I'm looking forward to some nice dialog and exchange because I know you guys have all the secrets to hot music !!!! (LOL !!!) - Reub.

Default Re: What if... You only had 4 plugin VST's? Which ones would you use?

Limiting: Ozone 4 or Voxengo Elephant
Compression: Stillwell Rocket & Major Tom (they're both dirt cheap and compliment each other nicely)
Reverb: Altiverb or if you want cheaper then IK Multimedia's CSR
Synth: I'm strictly a hardware synth guy so no comment here.
VST EQ: Sonalksis SV-157mkII

I downloaded the Rocket and Major Tom. Will give them a try. Still waiting for my new monitors to come in to try some stuff.

Thanks!

SPL Transient Designer, URS 1980 compressor, Oxford Parametric EQ.

I'm still looking for my dream reverb. I'd also need a delay. I've been very fond of the Kjaerhus Classic Delay (and it's free!)

Brandon

I'm liking the Kjaerhus Classic Delay as well.

But I haven't been able to successfully use any transient designer plugins.
A tutorial or hints in another thread would be appreciated if anyone so cares to do so. I just make a mess out of everything playing around with transients.
