well of course the best one i can think of would be...
the Microphone!
but really i think that one day the FIREPOD will go down with some of the greats....
This is a spinoff from another post.
What are the greatest pieces of recording equipment of all time?

I definitly think that ProTools deseves a place, not becasue it is in any way better or worse than any other DAW, but because it was the first and the most influential of all DAWs out on the market to date.
I 2nd the vote for MOTU digital frontends......

Now that I think of it, this is a stupid topic. I was trying to do a spinoff of another topic. I'm an idiot.
The title of this forum should have been "Gear You Can't Live Without".

Unfortunately it's way too far from most budgets. Someday I'll sell everything I have to buy one of those? ;D
Cheers!

I love the SSL 9000s. I am going to be recording my album on one in a couple months, but as nice as it is, it has not had nearly the impact in the world of music as the Shure SM57, something that is on almost every rock record recorded in the last 30years.Originally Posted by ronaz

I'm going to go with the Shure SM57. Versatile, sturdy, and relatively inexpensive!

The SSL consoles are basically like porn stars to me. Their nice to jerk off too, but the odds of getting something like are not in the average guys favor. Then again, most people really do want a console. I'm not sure if I need another crack addict running around my place....wait.Come on guys, I bet that most of recording freaks dream with SOLID STATE LOGIC's XL9000K

for old stuff, 57, u47, 1176 definitely, pultecs, multitrack tape machines ala what was done with Sgt. Peppers and consoles and monitor systems that were designed by people who LISTENED and CARED to what came out instead of going for features, specs and price points.
I read in EQ the other day that the U47 was designed in 1929 and costed $450 when it came out. I don't know what a car costed back then, but I'd guess it was about the same.
Brandon
Yeah, a car cost around $400-500. So, basically, your new microphone cost more than your new car. Glad it's not like that today.

When I was doing live sound (early 90s) at a college's 1200~ seat auditorium, the college bought a $2,000 AKG stereo mic, which I thought was crazy because that was twice the price of my gutless Cutless. But it sure was the nicest mic we had availible for use.

I remember back in High School we got 4 new SM57's for the Gym/Auditorium and I thought...wow this is some high end shit!!

Yeah, our school band is getting some good recording equipment. We still will sound like shit, just, we'll sound like better quality shit.

Remember that you can't make bad playing sound better with recording. Well actually with a metronome and the only problem being time this could actually be arguable.

Hey, I know exactly what you mean. Our band has been dismembering all kinds of pieces. It sucks. The band has completely ruined the New World Symphony for me. But at least we will get decent recordings of our band's playing
BTW, It's kinda cool, you have 666 marks, and you've got the lamb of god thing in your profile. Very Metal.
