What is the best DVD to get on learning to mix properly?

Any suggestions on what to buy to learning how to mix songs. I hear "Mixing With the Pro's" is good. Anybody have better suggestions? Something from a beginners standpoint but that's very far reaching.

Please Let Me Know, Gratias Vobis Ago

Honestly, a bunch of friends in bands looking willing to let you practice on. That's the way to go. Then you post the mix here and we give suggestions.

If you have no one in a band, then snag one of the "Mix This" files in the Member's Only section. Dry individual instrument tracks for you to eq, compress, add effects and mix. I just posted a song yesterday.

DVDs have their place, but I think the fundamental concepts require a book. From there you can move on to the more specific tactics a DVD can illustrate.

well a book is good and all but I've read lots of writing on eq'ing etc and seem to get nowhere. I'd like a visual aid to see how a professional would manipulate the different parts of a song, what he or she would do to get a certain kind of sound and to hear the result.

And on seeing friends master, I don't have the outlet to do that as none of my friends are good enough. They all produce music but none of it is anywhere near what I want. So any suggestions will be really helpful from someone on this site who knows what they are talking about. Thanks a lot

Member's Only - Home Recording Forum

There's the link to the part of this forum where you can find the "Mix This" threads. You are a member of this forum so it's open you to.

But I forgot to ask, what kind of music are you looking to work on? I just realized it would it's a night and day difference between genres. Learning to mix vocals over a hip/hop beat wouldn't help you eq and compress a kick drum to sit in a metal mix, would it?

Another thought: Mixing is a general term. Are you looking on ways to eq and compress? Maybe learn to record better so there's no need to eq. Or specific tricks in a DAW? What's your goals?

Well, the following two songs are good examples of what I'm trying to mix. Now these are over a year old and I have never asked for help before but I can't bear the thought of spending so much time only to come out with this quality.

I recently got Cubase 4 and Fruity Loops 8 and am getting a usb audio interface in 2 weeks to record with a lot better quality than these songs.

But, if I'm not careful I'll make slightly better versions of these songs and I want the quality to be 500% better, not 30%.

The Internal Mixing DVDs from Steinberg were very interesting. Definitely a great place to start. Here's a little clip: YouTube - Internal Mixing DVD Workshop (English Version)

Search function should find you the "Mix This" section.

You are a member. Says so right by your screen name.

Search the internet for mixing tutorials. I'd think that may yield some results.

The prior suggestions seemed valid to me, by the way. If your friends' music isn't "up-to-par" maybe you could help them get it there as you get your mixing skills "up-to-par" at the same time? Sounds like a win-win type of deal to me.

Using a book, this site, and other sites to gain concepts that you can then try out on your local bands is an excellent way to actually learn what is going on instead of relying solely upon the more "instant gratification" method of copying/mimicking what someone shows you on a TV screen or computer monitor. That's just me though. I understand wanting to be "doing it already" at a high level of proficiency, but that comes with learning and practice, just like everything else.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your intentions...

YEah the search function brought me to the members section and me being stupid didn't realise you could put songs there to be mixed. I think I'll post some of my stuff when I get the usb interface but also mix it myself to contrast and compare with anyone who'll do try my stuff. Thanks

My intentions are to learn this stuff so that I can record myself and my friends music. If they are the intentions you read then good on you

Thanks for the Steinberg idea I'll check it out.

About "My Goals" well they are to drastically improve the sound of those sample songs I put up.

Sorry to ask such basic questions I've always just used audacity and literally hoped for the best without knowing anything about what I'm doing.

Sincere props for the patient help
