Unhappy vocals . . . help ;-;?

I've recorded a very bass recorded track for my band, but I'm having this problem with the vocals, I can't get them to sound like they're "in the mix" more like they're on top of it. I'm using audacity, anyone have a step by step thing I could do to make them work? Thanks much, I'm pathetic.

There are 1,000,000,000 possible suggestions to your request. Post a sample of your rough mix and we can probably narrow it down to 1,000 suggestions of which 10 will hopefully be of use to you.

All kidding aside, your request if far too vague for anyone to be able to give much useful advice. Give us more to go on.

Ok, ever heard of primus? i would like it to be mixed similar to that, simply because the levels are similar. A.K.A. bass driven. And the vocals are shotty because well i'm no vocalist, but i like the way it sounds live, just sounds kinda wierd, which is similar to primus. And basically i just can't get the sound to blend more with everything else. I have the bass doubled, guitar center, and drums centre with some cymbals, right, and some left. I don't have fancy recording things, and my only high quality piece of recording equipment is an EV Dupercardioid dynamic mic. Hope that helps >.>

Like Sparquee, not trying to be unhelpful, but we really need to hear what you've got before we can suggest what you might do with it.

Take my word, no-one here will be destructive about your work, and take my word, too, that what gear you've got doesn't matter a jot.

But we can't help unless we hear stuff.

I feel like I stepped into a comedy routine..... you were asking for advice on getting the vocals to fit in the mix. Why would you then post a version of the mix without the vocals? Without hearing the tonal qualities of the vocals how can we possibly give you suggestions on how to get them to fit into this instrumental mix?

Two things...what Primus album are you talking about. The Brown album is super organic, while Pork Soda is much more put together cut and dry, in terms of recording technique. To me the song sounds like "Shake Hands with Beef". So if that's what you are going for, awesome, lol.

Second, pay close attention to your pan positions. If you have everything running right down the center it's all gonna blend together and sound right on top of each other. Try moving the pans of the drums as to how they would be if you were right in front of them listening to them, i.e. the snare panned a bit to the right, floor tom a bit to the left, etc. Once you have your instruments panned in much the same idea (again, nothing right on top of each other) track two sets of vocals right down the middle and give it a listen. Then move it around till it sticks out. Don't lay both takes on top of each other. Put one just a bit off the other.

Also, post your vocal tracks, lol.
