Default TubeEssence - valid choice or prosumer crap?

Anyone have experience with these pre-amps?

I tried the Aphex TubeEssence (307?),and really like the sound of it....compared to the Tascam US-428 pre-amps, which are really nothing special. Of course I only had a few quick chances with it, so am not sure memory is serving me correctly.

Are these tubeE. preamps a good thing? I am on a budget, really want to upgrade my sound. Am thinking of dropping the $100 or so I think, until I can possibly afford an RNP or other.

Thoughts?

PS recording above was for martin D-28, D'Addario strings.

Can you get one that cheap? Are you looking for a two channel pre, or just a single channel?

I really like my Studio Projects VTB-1, but then I don't really have anything to compare it to. It was $88 or there abouts, single channel pre.

I think they are so so. They are not tube pre amps, but use a tube to modulate (effect) the signal.
