Default Tube vs Solid State

Hey guys just wondering what you like more and trying to start a good conversation about this, You can name your pres here too. I happen to like both for what each offers. I've got a couple of Audiobuddys and a presonus tubepre. I'm gonna upgrade and get an other presonus, then a couple dmp3s. What about all of you?

Ben

With guitar amps its tubes 100% of the time....

..... but with everything else I think its a huge mistake to choose a piece of gear because the design is tube or solid state. Some tube designs are **** and colored others super clean. Keep in mind that gear by Neve, Trident API is all solid state.

True, what is the difference between recording and playing, in the sense of tube vs SS?

In every situation where a person screams tube without being specific, I can counter.

Neve, API, and SSL are all solid state designs for all I know. They have been used on more pro recordings than any other preamps.

When I was 17 I thought a tube guitar amp that I thought would save my tone problems. I ran out and bought a Lee Jackson. It does make noise, but I haven't had a use for that amp in years. I'd gladly take a Randall over the Lee Jackson any day.

In the end, quality is what we are looking for. I'm not sure using one particular technology or another makes much difference.

One of the characters in the modeling amps that I don't like is the inability to cut the distortion out when you play quieter....

I have been basement recording for a long time, and I can't hear the difference between a good tube pre-amp, or a solid state one.

Not sure what your experience level is with amp modelers...I will say that Vox's Tonelab and Line 6's Spyder Valve will clean up nicely when you back down on the attack of the guitar note or decrease volume.

Tube vs. Solid State breaks down to application/preference.

Thanx. I have a lot of experience repairing the Crates, Fenders, Peavey's, Behringers, you know, the cheaper ones. I hate to say that I haven't gotten into the pricier models....

Thanx again....

IMO performer has more to do with sound than any piece of equipment you can buy...Listen to Whitney Houston on a recording...I'm sure they recorded with only the best high end mics and pres....Listen to her live through a dynamic mic...she still sounds like her...her mic control is amazing and you can't buy the tone/timbre of her voice...same with guitar players...guitarist A who swears by Les Pauls and tube amps will still sound like guitarist A with a Hondo through a gorilla amp...sure there is a difference, but the core sound comes from the player/singer's technique and talent....I spent a lot of money learning this lesson
