Default sm58 picking up hiss

any one have any plugins that can get rid of hiss through my sm58? no matter how hard i try and where i move my mic, i still pic up hiss off of it coming into the computer. either that or some sound settings which may help...you guys are pretty awesome with your knowledge and the first response wins mad love from me.

i am using cubase 3 if that helps...

also my equipment

line 6 flextone II amp
phonic helix board 12 mixer
sm 58 (duh)
planet waves cables
M-Audio Audiophile 2496 sound card
monster cable RCA i300mkii 1m length

when i used cakewalk, it was giving me incredible amounts of hiss, and switching to cubase seems to have resolved most of this, but still creates it even with flat settings and no distortion.

i have a plugin for audacity that eliminates the hiss, but when i get the hiss sound profile, it distorts the guitars, adding a weird chime sound to the upper end of it....

HELP ME PLEASE!

Have you tried another mic? If not, do so.

If the noise or hiss remains, it's happening elsewhere in the signal chain.

Try some power conditioning like a Buy Monster Cable MP PRO 2500 Rack Power Center online at Musician's Friend

Read all of the customer reviews and most of them tell a story of how it removed noise.

we used to sell that rack at sound advice, and that thing was amazing...i do recommend it, ive managed to eliminate most of the hiss sound, by just changing settings on the mixer...im wondering if the lack of a preamp is causing me to put my settings on the board too high however and making it work a little too hard, causing some noise?

edit: what is a good site to post clips of music so you can hear what im talking about instead of just putting it on here saying FIX THIS!

double edit: posted it on garageband...will post the link when its up...if anyone has anything better that would be awesome too

Post it here and get some opinions on where it is coming from. Might be one of those things that is hard to diagnose unless you are standing in front of the equipment.

Try connecting the mic to different sources, pieces of equipment, etc. and try to isolate in what conditions it exists.

The problem is most likely noise before the mic or noise coming from cranking an preamp that doesn't like to be cranked. To eliminate the noise before the mic, the solution is obvious. To eliminate the noise from the preamp requires either a preamp upgrade or simply not pushing the preamp so hard. (I'd rather make up gain in recording software than have tons of hiss).
