I have never tried this. If I have time today I will do an Audix D6 vs Shure SM57 on my kick.

I also look forward to hear what you come up with using the sm57. I have wondered what the use of typical kick mic just inside the hole to get the full low end of the drum, and a sm57 inside close to where the beater hits, to get more of the click. Would this just be using mics for mics sake?

I can usually find a placement where I am getting enough of the attack and the resonance from the bass drum. I have heard of people using a mic on the inside pointed towards the beater and a mic on the outside.

I also have an Audix F14 kick mic that i will throw into the comparision just for curiosity sake.

I haven't used a 57 in the kick in a long time but when I was surprised how good it turned out.

The notion of using a mic for the attack and a mic for the "girth" is very popular. In fact, that's kind of what I've done on the last couple of projects I've done. A band ripped the cable out of my Beta 91 (I'm guessing that took about 100lbs of force to do) and so I've been using my Sennheiser MD 421 inside the kick and then using what I call "triangle overheads" where I use 3 mics equidistant from the snare. One in front of the kick drum, one behind the hi-hat (audience perspective) and one behind the floor tom. I've been using my Soundelux U99 which is INCREDIBLE in this position. It picks mammoth amounts of the right kind of low end and low mids My AKG 414 may be able to do this too, I'm not sure about the AT4050 or other condensers I own.

I find that I don't end up using too much of the "attack" mic in the mix these days, but we aren't talking about metal here so who knows. The only flaw with this setup is if the drummer gets a little aggressive on the cymbals, the front "overhead" in front of the kick mic can pick up quite a bit of that so in a way you sort of have a kick drum mic that is more sensitive to the same issues as an overhead.

And still on the kick issue, what about when the drummer's Kick doesn't have a hole in the front skin?! I had this with my last recording, and ended up placing the kick mic close to the front skin. I certainly wasn't about to cut a hole!! Not ideal..... but my god were we rushed! I actually ended up putting a sampled kick along side the original, to give it some attack. Not amazing, but better. I'll put the track up soon.

Cut a hole 8-) Make sure you do it with the right face expression. Like it is normal. Whistle something like Sweet dreams put kick mic on stand next to you cut the hole put it there 8-) Make sure you have someone to record it on camcorder and to protect your ass... 8)

P.S. Guys review my metal mix with vocals please.

I would of cut a hole, but I think the front skin was made of pure bred mountain Lama hide, who were fed on nothing but gold, and slaughtered by a priest in a ritual on only one day of the year when the sun shines through the eighth tree to the east......

I keep a coffee can so they can cut a hole in it.

Jazz works fine while with no hole. Boomy kick drums like that of The Who and Zeppelin can get away with this if the room is live. Other than that, I need to get a mic in there.
