Default SM 57 4 feet from drums.

I tried a 57 about 4 feet in front of a drumset a few weeks ago.

It was terribly thin sounding. I guess it needs the proximity effect more than I thought.

While we're on this topic could anyone tell me what they use for room mics? Im thinking of using my 603s for the next project I think needs that roomy sound, but I'd like to see what you guys are running.

I've had good luck with my Royer R121. I also use my AKG 414 a lot. I've used my 4050 halfway in between the band and the drums which I called an "everybody mic".

Every room is so different that there is no way to know. Just dick around. I'd recommend getting the room sound first and then going for the close mics when doing drums.

Good idea, I'll try that next time.
