Default Shure SM7b

Brandon, have you used it on female vocals yet?

This woman wants to come record at my house, and she is AMAZING. She is a pianist/singer and she does evanescence/alicia keys/broadway musical kind of stuff and I'm pissing all over myself. She is a kick ass musician and its such a good change from the other shitty ass high school bands im recording now. She wants to record playing my yamaha baby grand and singing at the same time. Should I worry about bleed, or just not worry about it? I have a Shure 58, but I don't like it on vocals. I haven't had a whole lot of experience mic'ing a real piano, so I'm not sure if I'm gonna be using room mics, or how close my close mics are gonna be.

I haven't tried the SM7 with females. I don't record many women, so I'm not sure how it would react at all.

I've never recorded a real piano accept when joking around and I just put a mic in the room.

If it were me, I'd put up whatever I thought was the best choice first for both the vocal and the piano. If it's not working, then you have some work to do.

Well if you need assistence with that piano first we got to know what kind of mics you have to work with. I it were me I'd take two AKG 414s and place them, with the lid of the piano open, one right on the edge in the curve of the piano, and one twards the back on the edge. Pan the one picking up the lows about to about 60 to left and the one picking up highs 60 to the right. If it I a pop piece I'd move the mics a little closer to the hammers in ordre to pick up more of the attack.

Is she going to balance herself properly for each song?

Sometimes I record guys who pound away on their acoustic guitars and then whisper their vocals and vice versa. Just curious because this will certainly effect your micing scheme.

Not sure I'll give you guys an update on Monday, though.

Also, I just bought Ivory so i might even end up just using that. Last night I recorded this yamaha keyboard, grey but not a motif thru the shitty preamps in my digidesign 002, sucked some lows out with a Waves EQ and used Tennessee Theater on RVerb at 51wet and it actually sounded fairly decent.

EVERYONE: Ivory sounds like tits. It takes over an hour to install and has 10-dvd discs, but it sounds like money. It's so customizeable and offers a lot more than mic'ing a piano in a nice room can. It is a CPU hog so I'm considering buying a third drive to hold the samples.

These are some clips of a couple of her songs. What mic would you guys sugggest to try on her voice? Oh yeah, and she has no problem tracking piano and vocals separately which is cool.

Myspace has to be the most unreliable piece of shit on the planet.

I can't get anything to download in Maxthon or Firefox.
