Hmm. I've never used either so I can't say for sure. I've never really been happy with my overheads and the mics I do have that are supposed to be good overheads I only own 1 of each. Dude, Can't you just order these mics from America, pay the extra shipping and save a few bucks? Just a thought. I noticed that the Shure mics are quite a bit cheaper here. From what I've read, I'd go with the KEL HM-1 if you are on a budget. Brandon |

We got our 603s for 200 a pair and regret it even then, I mean for drum overheads they really make your cymbals stand out because of a big high end boost. Yea, when KEL gets their Janurary shipment we are getting a pair, I'd go with them. -Deng |

I can speak for Deng on this one, because I work with him and am included in the "we". We bought the 603s about half a year ago I believe for being our main sdc drum overheads. The second we got them they sounded very very "tiny" and "thin" as drum overheads. These words are too vague to give a real understanding of the sound. Noticing after doing several drum kits of various styles of music (Metal, Funk, Hardcore, Blues, ect.) in two different rooms, one very large and wooden one very small and partially dead, that the mics always seem to ultra boost the his in the recording giving the drums a very anoying high, sound in the overheads, completely taking away from the entire mix and over powering the vocals and melody. Of coarse we found that a slow roll off from about 1-on, kinda got rid of this problem, but not completely. They are great mics for other things. They sound more incredable than any other mic I've ever used on some acoustic guitars. We tend to get people who come in with their expensive acoustics and we throw them our $100 samick and slap the $100 mxl on it and they never stop ranting about how good it sounds. In fact we just finished up a project with this acoustic and guitar, and after the next session for mixing, we will post a few clips with the set up. I've also heard that the 603 is really great as a tom mic, but I've never actually tried that so don't trust that too much. All in all, I've got to say its a great mic to have around, but for $400 its a bit of a stinker. I don't know anything though, try it for yourself, or get KELs!!! Ben

Oh also forgot to add in, they sound great on the one vocalist we have used them on. Ben

While I don't use 603's specifically, I do use and have used MXLs, and I like them a lot. But, it all depends on what you're doing and what the sound you're looking for is. -Tyler

thanx for the replys.. hm, I search for drumoverhead-mics.. and I am on cheap budget.. the oktavas are unacceptable highpriced here. shure KSM 109 is one of my favourite.. any other comments?

The Shure KSM 109 Rolls off below 400 and has several boosts peaking at 3.5k and 10k. For about 180 I'd choose the mxl instead. Its basically the same boosts up high with out the cut down low, and its a lot flatter. But I've never actually used the KSM. Really I'd say go with the KELs. Ben

While we should always be aware of frequency response graphs, I wouldn't factor that in when purchasing a mic unless I was looking for a specific character. Brandon |
