Default RNC compressor

Hey all,

Who in this forum have the RNC compressor or have tried it before? What's your opinion on the product?

I was doing a search online for a cheap but nice or decent compressor and this one seems to have the most positive reviews for only $200. I'm shock!!! If it's really this good, I thinking about getting one soon. If it's not good I can always return it for a full refund or use it for something else. Hey, it's only $200... what have I got to lose?

Tell me what you guys think? Thanks.

I say go for it. If I can scrape up the cash, I'm buying one too. I just bought a Distressor EL-8x and have been blow away by how good it is. It's the first piece of high end gear that really blew my mind!

I wouldn't expect the RNC to have the same character as the Distressor EL-8x, but I don't expect the Distressor to have the same character as any other compressor either.

It was recently recommended to me to use the RNC to control dynamics and then the Distressor to add color/distortion/whatever. I can see this being a very sensible approach for a killer signal chain.

While I have no exerience with the RNC, it's amazing how many guys who are HARDCORE gear dudes push them. Hell, Fletcher from Mercenary Audio sells these things and he won't even sell Vintech. Very interesting!

He's the big wig over at Mercenary Audio. He's very active online more in the pro recording circles. If you want high end gear, he's the first guy I recommend. He's a bit crude, but I think "crude" is funny. However, he will bend over backwards to make you happy. You can return anything you buy from Mercenary Audio whenever you want. It's a pretty badass little shop. I just wish I had millions to waste there.

I can return anything? Seriously? Cool! I just ordered my 3D ADCD converter comparison CD yesterday from Mercenary. Can't wait til it gets here.

Thanks for the info.

I'm excited for you, man. Let me know how it is. I might consider getting one too. But right now I'm leaning towards the Distressor, but would like to know about the RNC too.

Cheers

The price tag on the Distressor will keep it on page two of my "Lust List" for a while. Getting an RNC & RNLA was just too tempting (considering the price point). I'm looking forward to chaining them and playing around with them on both tracking and mixing. It's always been more my style to go for a very "vanilla" sound while tracking and then adding "flavor" during the mix down but I can certainly see advantages to making certain flavor decisions up front and printing them early on.

I plan to do some comparison recording with them so I'll post some samples here for your listening pleasure. Since I'm currently in the lovey, honeymoon stage with my new UAD compressors I'll probably use them as my point of comparison.

I don't quite look at it like this anymore. I see it more like a vanilla recipe (my ideal tone) calls for 2 cups of sugar and not using the Distressor gives me just one cup of sugar. The end result just ain't as sweet even if we are talking about plain vanilla.

I swear I'll have clips for this thing sooner or later. I'm in the middle of a MASSIVE / VIOLENT recording schedule. My RecordingReview time has been reduced dramatically.

Man, your really driving me nuts here Brandon. Every time you make a compressor post anywhereI always hope it would be about the Distressor or that you would have samples.

Well, again and again... some of us are still waiting. I'm not saying you should rush, in fact I like that you take your time and get it good cause I want to hear some good things happening.

Did you get yourself into a MASSIVE / VIOLENT recording with that Distressor? I had a feeling it might be that. I'm still jealous that I don't have one. Well, keep up that hard work and let us know how your doing.

Cheers
