Default quick echo question

its been bugging me alot lately on how to get a nice sounding echo, ive tried a few different plugins and cant ever get anything decent sounding so i end up doing it manually. (make copies of the section i want echoed and set them apart a certain distance and make each subsequent piece a little quieter than the last) Just wondering if anyone has any ideas, thanks.

P.s. In case im being confusing heres a little example of more-or-less what i mean from nas' "one mic".

Thanks

Sounds ok to me for an echo/delay.
A bit time consuming doing it the way you have described.
What plugins do you have?
I use waves supertap to get that type of effect.
Doesn't cubase come with some free plugins? ie. tape delay is one of them from memory which should be able to do the effect you are after.

I did this in about 25 seconds on cool edit pro. I used the basic echo in the program itself.

...and it's awesome! This is my favorite delay plugin and I've tried a bunch.

There is no magic setting for "awesome" delay. In fact, I don't even know what an "awesome" delay sound is. Most delay sounds have been screwed up in one way or another by default. It's really just a hit or miss thing and it takes a bunch of trial and error to find something that sounds cool on the voice you are using.

One thing I have found that makes delay and reverb " work " better for me, is to put them on an FX track ( this is in Cubase 4. You may have to set it up a bit differently depending on your program). You select the plug-in for delay or reverb that you like and make sure the " mix " or "wet " level is all the way up.

You select the track ( say vocals ) that you want delayed or reverbed and then " send " it to the FX channel that has the delay or reverb on it. In Cubase, on each channel window, there are places for inserts and sends. You'll use one of the sends for this. Once you have the vocals or whatever sent to the FX channel, you pull the fader on the FX channel down to where it sounds good to you.

This way, you can EQ the reverb or delay if you like, plus, you can send other instruments to it as well. You just adjust the amount that each particular channel sends to the FX channel.
It makes for less of a load on the computer as well. Less instances of reverb are a good thing to me.
