Default Pro tools importing v7.3 to 6.8

I know pt is backwards compatible but can i open a session of v7.3 from v6.8 or do i have to import the audio files or session data to get them into a 6.8 session?

If so i have tried to import audio files and all the tracks show up at the beginning and i have to use spot mode to get them to the correct timing, is there an easier way to do this? Or will import session data work?

Thanks

I use 6.9.2, and a clients producer uses 7.x...

All my efforts to open 7.x session files in 6.9 fail.

So, to answer your question, yes, the only way to use 7.x in 6.8 is to import full audio files.

I suggest making sure the file start times are the same, as I believe the edit window region positions are locked in the session info...which you won't have.

One time consuming, yet fairly fool-proof way to do this is "flattening" the files. By this I mean bouncing the mono files (all of them) with a standard start time. The start time is 0.00.000 or whatever you determine it to be, just make sure it's the same for all files...even tracks with only region pieces scattered about. THis way, importing the newly bounced audio files into a new session will line everything up at 0.

Other suggestions would include making sure to do fades and crossfades at editpoints and region starts and stops (at the region pieces scattered throughout).

You can bounce down processing during the process too...

also, I'm not sure about how panning affects bouncing and how many files you can bounce at once.

I believe that if you pan while bouncing through a stereo bus, the result will be recorded in the new file

I've always bounced one file at a time, through a bus. (If mono, then to one side of a stereo buss). This is time-consuming

Yeah, I tried sending my 7.1 session to a guy using 6.x and he couldn't open them. What I do is just consolidate all the tracks so they're starting right at the beginning and label them all with the same letter to find them quickly. So, "X_Kck, X_Vox, X_Bass...."

Andrew,

does consolidating create (new) Audio files, with the silence inserted?

Actually i found out if you go to file>save copy in it gives you the option 6.x which then you can open the session in 6.whatever. you loose the features of 7.x (region grouping, instrument tracks etc) but the session opens fine.
