    Default More Metal Bass Problems

Ok... I started a thread on this before but I just recorded again this weekend and life is no better.

Same band as last time, a "hardcore" band (the bassist wanted to redo tracks, cuz he just picked up a new Mesa head).? We tried a few things and decided to just put a Beta 52 on the edge of a cone.? NOTE he was playing really loud because he wanted to get some power tube saturation for some natural distortion and grit.? Anyway, during mic checks it sounded pretty good and workable...but then after we did the recording and it was with the mix, to me it sounded horrid.? It sounded weak and harsh at the same time, and it just didn't feel right.? I was thinking DI-ing bass into a tubepre and then post effecting everything would be a good way to go...or should we just record softer?? Or what?? This reallllly annoys me.

(sorry, had to modify the post...I put Beta 57 as opposed to what we really recorded with which was a Beta 52...all these god damned numbers)

I'd like to hear what you have so far. Maybe from there we can help.
