Exclamation mono - yes, mono.

Ok, I have some elcheapo el crappo sounding powered nearfield monitors that i love. I always switch to them. I want to use one of them as a try hard auratone every now and then. Thing is I dont have a mono out any where on my desk!! Well I do, but its only on the h/phone line. I use a desk which is really a live desk (soundcraft spirit 24/8). So this is my question, If I have a stereo line going into 2 tracks panned hard left and right and I pan one over to the other side, is this the same as mono? I know it is mono in the sense that both left and right are coming out of the one speaker, but in terms of voltage or energy distribution (or whatever, Im not even gonna try and sound technical) by panning, is this equal to how a mono speaker is usually driven?

Cheers

Good question... I don't know the answer, but I'm interested to know it.

This goes some way to explain it, but doesn't take it the whole way (it's actually answering a slightly different question)...

Q. What is the difference between mono with one speaker and mono with two?

you are taking a stereo mix and plugging it into a mix desk so, yes -panning both stereo channels to one side will sum the mix to mono.

if you use the + wire from L ch out and the - wire from the R ch out on 1 monitor speaker, you'll get mono summing...

the problem with monitoring a mix you'd like to hear in mono -but don't have a mono monitor to switch over to, is that, yes -you can pan all left but if you run standard verbs and other fx in the 2buss then they will still broadcast stereo.

That sounds like what I will have to do. Thanks for that advice. Was also thinking though, rather then panning both channels hard to one side, what if they were both panned to the middle? Would that be any different to hard panning?

Cheers

yes. if the pans are equal in (same)position, it will be mono.

btw -just wanna follow up on wut i said in this^last part cuz it's a bit complex, this mono/stereo field biz.. wut i'm saying there is, when ur mixing within the (program; cubase, pt etc)box and simply running ur stereo outs to puter speeks or powered monitors etc., there are no pans for the 2buss out. therefore, tho u could pan all channels center for a playbak, the stereo fx loops within the box are still broadcasting stereo. in this case, ur not actually monitoring the mix in mono. so, that's y i say u can pan a mix center or to 1 side and monitor the mix in mono -only after the mix is made tho.
