Default internal drum micing

Just been wondering if this is a sound technique. I've been kicking around the idea of placing some in my bass drums to help isolate the actual drum sound.
i've mic'ed from the front forever, and have been seeing in other forums the talk about the benefits, but the overall knowledgebase is scant. Anyone tried
the WAY overpriced May system? Are there even any other competitors? i've come up with my own sort of mount for a mic to be suspended from bungee
cords, and i've read that a placement torwards the resonant side is better than opposed to the batter side. Any thoughts?

What is that? I've never heard of it.

The inside of the drum has way more attack but not nearly as much meat. I've really gotten into the sound of the outside of the drum (as in at least 12" outside the kick drum") with a LDC condenser (my Soundelux U99 is ENORMOUS in this application). Because I've been too lazy to get my Shure Beta 91 fixed, I've had to get creative. The Beta 91 inside captured plenty of low end, but it was much tigher sounding and way more attack too.

You'll just have to try it to see if it works for what you are doing. When I use my Soundelux U99 out front I still place a MD 421 inside the drum but I find myself using it sparingly.

That's interesting. I use this thing called a "stand".

Inside the kick drum? Uhh.. I've never even thought of that and I've certainly never read about it. I think I'll try it just to see what it does. It's an "out there" trick so you know what will happen. Are you saying to place a mic inside the kick drum and face it at the audience?

yeah, i've heard if you direct it to the resonant head, just in from the edge, it has a ****er, deeper tone than just straight on. haven't checked it yet meself, but will try this weekend.

I'm guessing that this tone would similar to that of a subkick or something. I couldn't imagine it having any attack in it. Then again, that has it's place with certain styles of music, I guess.

I have been micing my kick from inside the drum. I face the mic towards the batter point to get the attack. I usually have the front head off but i have done it both ways. Those mic comparison recordings that I posted were done with the mic inside the drum.

after having tried every configuration, i've come to side with the batter side school of thought. I'm not sure where i read the resonant side theory, but it sucks big time. ringing
and weird overtones. no definition.
