Default How the heck do you get that vocal effect?

    Hey guys,

While drums i think are my forte, I have trouble with getting a real sweet vocal sound - I generally use a compressor, eq and masterati vocal plugin - which seems to work fine sometimes.

But wwhat I would love to do is that real cool vocal effect (delay is it?) where the vocals trail off at an interval after each line,

    Like "blah blah forever.....ever......ever...ever

In time with the track too

    Any ideas?

Yeap that would be delay. If you want to get just certain words to trigger it (like at the end of a line like you were saying), you have to set up a seperate track with the delay effect on it. Then set up a send from the vocal track to the delay track. Automate the send on those words or whatever and ur in business.

Most delays link up to the project bpm and you can adjust the delay in 1/4, 1/8, etc. notes, so the delay is in time.

You NEED automation so definitely do your homework on that one. The echo effects are pretty damn cool when they are pretty damn cool. Make sure to set them up on an aux send / FX track and set them to 100% wet. I'm a big fan of the http://www.kaosaudio.com/kjaerhus-classic-delay-free/ for this sort of thing.

You may also do some insert automation if you don't use send automation to your FX track - this way you could also control which part of the sample you want that delay effect and how much and even its panning! I usually use a FX track and send it and then back to the track... then is just a tweak on the volume and pan of the FX which is being send and that's it...

ducking delay can do close to what you want without automation. You should learn to use automation anyway, but ducking delay is basically automatically sending the wet effect through a compressor side-chained with the dry original signal, so that you don't hear much of the delay when the vocal is singing, but you do when the vocal stops.

The ducker delay is one way to go and is often cool, but I've found that most of the time there will be delays that pop out when I don't want them to and so I'm back to automating again. For me, it's just more productive to go in manually and get exactly what I want when I want it.

Of course, the little surprises are sometimes priceless.
