Default How does everyone record drums?

I'd love to hear about the ways you guys record drums, what mics you use, positioning, techniques if you use them or if you just use your ear, examples of past times, maybe some mp3s or pics. Just tell me about how you do it!

I usually use two MXL 603s for overheads using the RECORDERMAN technique.
I get a 57 or two on snare, a beta 52 on bass drum, and 57s on the toms. Soon I may mic hi-hat with my KSM27 or use it as an aditional room mic depending on what sounds good.

What about all you?

This one was a little tough!!

Normally its KSM 32s OH
SM57 Snare
Beta52 kick
Microtech Geffell UM70s Room
Audio Technical 4060 about 3 feet in front of the kit.
Yamaha sub kick if I am feeling fancy.

I have absolutely no method to my drums. I am still looking for a method I'm happy with...not that it would ever work twice.

I used my Soundelux U99 about 3 feet in front of the kick about 3 feet off the ground. I used an AKG 414 about 12 feet back (in another room) as a room mic.

Brandon- No close micing?

Do you have two overheads to work with? Maybe trying a little of that could help you out a bit though room micing is the more natural sound that we all want. I've also found that if I mic a set twice It'll sound like I miced it twice. hmmmm.

Brandon- how is your Soundelux U99? I'd like to get a better knowledge for more mics.

I use SM57's on snare top and bottom, sennheiser md421's on toms, akg d112 in kick, sm 81's as OH's,? an AT 4033 4 feet or so in front of the kick a little below the tom rack, and a royer r121 a little above the drummer's head and behind him. I've tracked in a really dead room and a big room with high ceilings and marble floor. So far the dead room ALWAYS sounds like shit for drums. I've recorded a fucking awful Sunlite kit and a really really nice custom-made kit...and the custom-built kit sounds a million times better. So because drums are an acoustic instrument it's really all about the source, I tried my best, but there was no way in hell I could make the Sunlite kit sound good.

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page...bandID=281476? "Demo"? that's the band with the custom drum kit. Also the harmonica and shakers were recorded in the large room kinda by the Royer I think. None of this is mixed, i might of dragged my hand across some faders to make it softer and I added some RVerb to the vocals and the slide.

Damn computer speakers are fried again. I'll have to break down and buy something decent soon.

The 2 mic drum thing was something I did once. A week before that I was doing a modern rock thing with a DW. I had a mic on bottom and top of each drum and a mic on each cymbal.

There are elements of each that I prefer, but neither is IT.

This new room that I'm preparing my brain for, will be the answer.

well i have done live work with just as little as an AT4040 and a kick mic (that was borrowed) Samson mics suck by the way

the sounds are good and i had it pointed dead center of the kit and running with enough gain that i can get some great sounds. the snare might be the weakest thing but i still think its fine... the band has not given me any right to post a sample though...

Hey Andrew07,

There is nothing wrong with those drums.

Where do you get a marble floor?
