Default how do i make vocals jump out at you???

i'm a producer/songwriter and now im learning the mixing/engineering part of it and i'm working on a song that i did with my rnb artist to sell to a major label and one of the marketers for sony loves it but she wants the vocals to jump out more to give it a more professonal sound...would this be better by turning up the vocals or boosting eq in the higher frequencies to make the vocals sound clear ..right now i have 8 dubs 4 low 4 higher to make it thick with some adlibs....any advice besides this song is gonna get pitched to rihanna and cassie's ppl who only can sing 3 damn octaves anyways lol

I'm not sure what kind of problem you're facing here but one thing I tried recently and liked for the same purpose is to first figure out which instrument is competing with the vocal (in the same frequency range) and automate the eq on that such that when the vocal is going, the part of the signal that's currently competing with the vocal gets taken down a bit. You could dip the volume of the competing instrument instead and that may work but may be less subtle. Really though I'm assuming a lot here about what's going on in your track. It would be best to post the track (or a clip) in the "reviews" section to demonstrate clearly what the issue is. Words fall short in decribing these things sometimes.

Good luck and congrats on the apparent success of your track.

Charlie

Yup. There are 100,000 possibilities here. I could start writing them all down, but it would be much easier if you attached an mp3 here or at Recording Reviews so we can help more.
