Default Gravelly Vocals

If you like turning your voice into a Rod Stewart or Bryan Adams type rasp try the Waves MondoMod plugin - preset 5 Dirt,

the result is at www.myspace.com/spunkymunkey2u - Cute Rocker Chick song,

a little history, the song was originally titled, I sent a text to the President but in the end I decided I am not a political songwriter so it was kicking around and I used the Cute Rocker Chick as inspiration to get some words down. I also employed the technique of really going over the top in recording the vocals based on a recent article here.

I get what you are saying, but maybe I'm a little too "hardcore".

The tone that Rod Steward or Bryan Adams have is in their throat.

The effect you have applied seams a lot more like a distortion effect (it's hard to tell with Myspace and only hearing the left side of my computer speakers).

The effect that have added does sound cool, but I wouldn't say it's a Rod Steward or Bryan Adams effect because I don't require hearing distortion on any one of their voices.

I don't mean to be too picky of an asshole about your description, but I want to make sure that the young recording people recording this totally understand that the tone of the singer comes from a singer and fundamental vocal tone can not really be altered with effects, eq, etc.

Awesome. I'm glad to hear that the article made a difference. No imagine singing this song the "non-over-the-top" way.

good clarification, a couple of points, I recorded the vocal initially without going over the top and it did not work out , no real expression to the vocal, then a few days later I did the over the top one recording the vocal using only one rythm guitar track and drum, I find I normally get a better vocal that way,

this song was very tough to get the guitar solo in the middle to eq so it would cut through the mix and finally what I did was take the guitar solo and change it to sitar midi and use both of them together in the final mix.

You got lucky. Most of the time, singers can "get by" with a flat and lifeless vocal recording and not realize how much more intense the song could be. Luckily, the song wasn't working until you smashed it.

I'm glad it worked out for you dude!

How do you screw and chop vocals? What plug-ins or effects do you use?
