    Default Good sound placement VST's?

I need high quality VST's/AU's that work with Logic that model the sound characteristic changes to a listener at long/short distances, elevations, etc, and ofc deals with direction too and EQ.

I've yet to find a good one, the best I can find are basic binaural plugins and that isn't enough. I'm willing to pay for a program, but if you know of any free ones, do tell! And also tell me of any priced ones too, and I'll bookmark for later when all else fails.

Basically I'm trying to make something sound live without micing the original DI. (too much can go wrong here, obviously)

And by live I don't mean shitty, I mean live like Slane Castle RHCP recording live.

Recording has come full circle: making an overdubbed track sound like it was done live. To me, live isn't a particular sound quality or tonality, it's the way the band meshes and plays off of each other. Things like short pauses in the middle of songs, speeding up and slowing down seamlessly, and having to rely on the guitarist doing the backup vocals when he really can't sing. Just my thoughts.

In part, I think you've answered your own question... There may be a specific VST that specialises in this, but all these things can be achieved using bog-standard plugins - panning, eq, convolution reverb, delay & other modulation effects. Some better convolution reverbs include things like eq, delay & modulation. I seem to remember reading about one recently that had 2 convolution engines & quite a few other tricks up it's sleeve, but I can't remember the name... I think it was in Sound On Sound mag.

The best free vst plugin that can create binaural-type space placement effects is possibly Prodyspace. Among the commercial plugins, I like WaveArt's Panorama.
An effect like that works best in music with very sparse instrumentation. Otherwise you're just needlessly cluttering up the stereo field.

I am a big proponent of convolution and modeling technology. If we want to simulate an acoustic space or a binaural effect, it seems to me that convolution is currently our best option.

    http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/apr0...es/impulse.htm

The SIR 1 convolution engine is free, and it works fine. I managed to get my hands on a pile of free impulses a couple of years ago, but I don't recall where I found them.

As mentioned above, 2C's Aether reverb is one of the best digital 'verbs out there. I usually reach for the convolution reverbs nowadays. Rook2c4 mentioned Panorama. I've had limited success with that plug. It seems to try to digitally simulate stereo from a mono source, but I have never heard a convincing digital plugin that has been able to accomplish such a monumental task better than convolution.

I second that about convolution reverbs, they're awesome! Especially if I'm looking for a natural-sounding, realistic reverb effect, convolution is normally my option #1.

Although on those rare occasions when I need a type of, "from a specific direction behind your head" bin-aural effect, then I usually use Prodyspace, as I've been unable to get that effect convincingly from convolution (unless maybe if I'd create an impulse from Prodyspace - I haven't tried that yet, but I suppose it might work).

Damn I forgot to mention... must be mac compatable! (Prodyspace looks great but I can't use it! )

Cool thread, dudes. This convolution business is something I tinkered with back in 2002 quite a bit. At the time it was just too taxing on the ol' Pentium 3. Times have changed now and it's probably time for me to find a kickass convolution reverb.

Pande, if you haven't already done so, try the demo for the 112dB Redline Monitor.

    http://www.112db.com/redline/monitor/

This is an unusual plugin. It's difficult to figure out how to describe its function. It's like a time/space manipulator! I stumbled upon it thinking that the effect was intended to simulate the sound of monitor speakers while listening on your headphones. In reality, it does a great job of mangling the stereo image in a unique way. Pink Floyd would have endorsed the Redline Monitor.

Eh, its gonna set me back 100 bucks? I'm downloading demo rite now to see if it does the job and I may buy it. Looks great, I'm surprised I've not come across this plugin. !
