Default Good idea for a small home studio?

Hey everyone

I am setting up my basement studio now. Currently I have one room that will soon have some DIY acoustic treatment. It isn't optimal, but It's all I got.

I was planning for this room be my live room as well as my control room, but after reading that thread discussing this situation, I got an idea...

Adjacent from my main room is a storage room. It would be an awful room to make a mix in, so that's out of question. I'm running my DAW on a laptop and think it may be useful to move the laptop to the storage room and have the drummer record in the main room. I would leave the desk set up with monitors and all in the live room, then when I'm ready to mix, move the laptop back to the live room. I want to do this simply for comfortability for the clients I am going to be recording.

The only thing is that this may cause some trouble with the interface since I'd have to move that as well.

Any suggestions?

Why would you want the laptop in a separate room? Unless it is acoustically isolated, there's really no benefit to you being in there.

Just so I can sit in the other room, hit record, stop, record again, stop, start in the middle of the song, stop, record, stop. That way, I don't have to sit in the same room as the drum kit.

As I said, just for comfort purposes. Then when the drummer is done, I move back to the main room.

That's confusing. Why can't you hit the record / stop buttons while being seated in the main room? Like 'boxmillar' said, it might make sense if you'd like isolation; i.e. if you're monitoring the drums while they're being played without actually hearing the real sound of the drums from the main room. But I don't see much sense or even comfort for your client, in doing so otherwise.

Exactly. I don't see how this is any different from simply wearing earplugs, except it's slightly more of a pain in the arse. If your client is too shy to play in front of 1 person, maybe they aren't cut out for this whole music thing.
