Default EQ levels

Could anyone tell me if there is some sort of table out there for reccomending EQ levels for different instruments/vocals etc.

I haven't a clue about the ranges!!

I am currently using sonar 4

Its all to personal taste and varies from mix to mix. A few things I typically do are:

Add a high shelf on vocals around 10-12k to make it a bit more present

Add a highpass filter on everything but the kick at 100

Cut the snare at around 600 to get rid of the ring

I mean thats just barely scratching the surface... but once you start mixing a bunch you will learn the frequencies you n eed toc ut or boost just by listening to a sound.

Bullshit! You know exactly what a given instrument needs, you just don't know how to articulate that into English.

First, are you reaching for an EQ because the source is not what you want or are you reaching for an EQ because you think you are supposed to?

Second, if you hear something you don't like in the tone of the track, you need to find it. Grab your parametric EQ, boost by 10-15 dB with fairly narrow band and sweep until you find that thing you hate. Now pull the boost back down to zero and adjust as needed.

Most big boy vintage EQs had the knobs worn off years ago and weren't accurate with their markings anyway. The big boys just twist until they find what they like.

As far as things I do every single time, there isn't one EQ setting I use every time. Not one.

I guess it is a case of trial and error then. Practice makes perfect and all that. Thanks again though.

p.s I will definitely not be resuming video games!!

I will let you know how I go on.

Ha! Yeah, you are probably right. Maybe some of these beginner "presets" that NEVER worked for me have their place.
