Well, the "magic" happens before the mics. This is Audio Engineering Rule #1. (Check out my latest blog. It's The Musicians....Not The Recording Gear | Home Recording Blog )

So, you need to do whatever it takes to get the junk before the mics to sound as ideal as possible. In this case, you have a guitar amp blasting into your drum mics. So, we need to get rid of that.

What you are asking is not really about recording specifically. You are asking how to mute your amp and still get signal out of the headphone jack. Some amps will do this automatically. Some don't have a headphone jack at all.

I'm curious how the guitar player is going to hear himself with your rig if the amp is muted.

If you have the space and If you want to record the guitar and drums together, distance is a huge help. Tossing an amp in a closet or something like that is a great way to knock its volume down. Blankets go a long way as well.

If it was me, I'd turn the amp WAY down, mic it, and then run that into the drummers headphone mix.

Another option is to record the guitar to a click and simply play that back into your drummers headphones.

Thanks d00d!! The reason the guitar is still heard is cause i plug the headphones into the extension speaker of a crate xt120r combo and it makes it be able to be alot quieter, but i have room, like a little cut out in my basement the size of a closet that i insultated drywalled and stapled foam all over in for my guitar tone originally becuase my room that i was recording in was dead and my living rooms rigt above it, so i couldnt record at night really, no insulation or nuttin in the sealing, so i could easily throw my amp in there!! but also ive never thought of just recording the guitar to a click track and then do it like that, that definately sounds the easiest, to me at least, but im going to try that, Thanks again man!!
