Default Digital Multitrack

Well they dont make the roland Vs2480 anymore, and Im not sure how much longer my Akai DPS 16 is gonna hold up. Im still not sure about switching to a computer based recording system. What in everybodys opinion, is the best dedicated multitrack out there today??( I really liked the yamaha AW4416 but could not afford one at that time)

Hey travis,

I dont like the thought of switching to a computer based system either, and i have an AW4416....love it, esp the mix automation built in

I paid about 3000.00 for it when it first came out, but now you can find them for around 500.00 if your still interested....thats used of coarse.

The AW4416 does have a pretty steep learning curve, but once you understand all the layers it has and the signal routing, its a great machine.

Buy contrast, Tascam just came out with a new model you can see it here

Buy TASCAM 2488neo 24-Track Digital Recording Workstation at Musician's Friend

just my 2 cents

Hey, its a good 2 cents, but I am pretty sure the Tascam does not have mix automation, which is something I really do want in my next recorder. I'm thinking about a pro-tools 003 if I go the computer route , but would rather have an AW4416 type recorder with good moterized faders. Ive had my fill of Akai quirkiness so I dont want a DPS24. A nice 16 track WITH mix automation and USB or firewire conectivity AND an intuitive user interface. I'm probably asking for too much.

Yah, I've been keepin my eyes open too for something new with mix automation...but like you say, since they dont make the 2480 anymore there hard to find

Last i heard, i think Yamaha was still makin the AW2400...which i believe has automated faders and scenes.....the problem i have now with my Aw4416 is its "not easy" to transfer wave files from the machine to a computer, which is what i would like to be able to do....no usb port on the 4416 and you need an adat expansion card to do it otherwise....So I've been keepin my eye open too!

Cant you write files as data or stereo wave files to cdrw and then load them into your computer? There is a scsi to firewire adapter out there for about $125 but I have no Idea if it works well.

Yah...I either have to back up the entire song or export as a wave file and burn it to disc....but if i want to just work on 1 track its a real pain to do that...then the only way to get it back in the AW is load it thru the onboard cd drive which takes FOREVER!!!......

I do alot of wave manipulation in soundforge and melodyne...sometimes 1 track and sometimes the stereo mix...so goin back and forth without usb or some other avenue is real time consuming...thats why i've been lookin into a more up to date machine....

I will try to find that link to the scsi to firewire adapter. Your mission, should you choose to accept it,(and I shall disavow any knowledge of this suggestion), is to order this adapter, implement the appropriate drivers for your computational device, determine it's usefulness, and then report your findings to this forum. .........But all joking aside, that adapter might keep you from having to buy another recorder.

FR1SX Firewire-Ultra SCSI Converter I called Akai to find out if my Dps16 does or does not have "term" power at the 50 pin connecter, but the rep said he didnt know and that they no longer provide support for my unit. He also did not know if this converter would work with the Dps16. Someone else in another forum suggested that it would.

If you don't want to go with a computer rig, why not just snag a used version of the multi-track recorder you already own? You'll probably get it for 1/5 the price.
