Default death metal tone

i was wondering if anybody knew which external guitar amp processors gives off a better deathmetal tone... i was looking at the line 6 pocket pod or the behringer v-amp pro, the tone that im looking for is sort of along the lines of malevolent creation/ suffocation tone.. i understand that it wont be exactly like that tone but i just want something that will get closest to that tone so that way i dont have to set up my entire rig just to get that tone

Opeth gets their sound from running a boss GT-6 through a laney stack, supposedly on the clean channel. I don't know any specifics beyond that. Moral is, check out the boss if you havent already.

I've been using the Boss GT-6 thru a Peavey 6505 (on the clean channel) and Peavey Valveking cabinet with really good results. I assume the GT-8/GT-10 are just as good as they are updates to the GT-6...

It depends on how serious you are about your tone. Granted, a lot of death metal / black metal has what I consider to be shitty guitar tone when compared to their thrash (and most other metal genre) counterparts. I can't think of any external simulators that have impressed me.

The one thing that has impressed me in the simultor world is Revalver MK3.

Take a listen to the Disillusion album In the times of Splendour and the Melechesh album sphynx.. Those guitar tones are what I'd call slick death metal tones. but then, I'm not really a fan of the thrash sound. I don't like a lot of death metal sounds either (nile, Carcass, Cryptopsy etc. could be better tonally IMO)

Black metal guitar tones are usually a pile of shit with some extra crap sprinkled on top, mashed into a microwave and nuked for an hour before being left to rot on the side of the road for a couple of months. But isn't that the idea?

Other tones I think are CLEVER (but don't necessarily love) are the Meshuggah tones and Isis - who aren't really hard metal.

Agreed. I thought the idea was to sound scary. Pulling out the uranium in a nuclear weapon and tossing in some cheetos probably won't have the same effect. I'm more afraid of nuclear weapons than cheetos.

ok so i had a chance to try out the line 6 pocket pod i like it .. it gives me the tone that i need (again i dont need it to be tube quality tone, i have an amp that already gives me that i just didnt want to have to take all my recording stuff from my home to the studio everytime i get an idea for a song) ok so now here is the deal, i would like to have a rack mount setup instead of the pocket pod which is why i was looking at the behringer v-amp, does anyone have this unit that can make some samples of some metal tones? or somewhere i can go hear samples of this unit?

p.s. and for the record i will never spend another 1800 on a mesa boogie ever again!!!!
sorry i just had to get that out!

The GT line by Boss will probably get you there - you can stack a Mesa or 6505 sim with a Ibanez Tubescreamer sim in front.

If you want rackmount, get the Vamp. I've got the original POD PRO, the Bass Vamp Pro and Guitar Vamp Pro and I really prefer the Bass Vamp. It has the tones most players want (blues/country/rock/metal), but most importantly, it focusses on compression rather than reverb. The Suffocation sound is a sludgefest compressed Recto type thing as a rule. Make sure your pickups etc match that. Ultimately, they can all do it, because most of the sound is in your tuning and your hands - physical aspects of the strings, rather than Mickey Mouse toys in the path.
