Default D112 on bass is is just right.

The last few bands that I've tracked live off the floor I've used a d112 on bass guitar and found it to be "just right". I've almost sold this mic a ton of times but I think it has found its place in my studio now. It seems to have the right amount of rejection and natural sound for this application. It isn't super tubby either.

    Cheers

I was gonna ask about the "tubby" part.

There have been days when I've loved that mic, although most of the time I haven't. I do remember in the shootouts I did for KHR, that it had the best "low end transients". That's something I may need to revisit sometime.

Yeah it does something cool in the 100hz territory. It doesn't become overbearing really easily. It doesn't seem like the "sexy" choice right away but I've now had multiple experiences of sitting back after a mix saying to my self weeks later, "that bass sounds really nice".

Ha! The adjective 'tubby' is an interesting one. I have used that word to distinctively describe the D112. Yet you say that it is NOT 'tubby'.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I use the word tubby to mean "an indistinct low-midrange from around 150-400Hz". If any microphone is more "tubby" than the D112, let me know.

I have found the mic to be more useful on bass and guitar cabinets than on kick drums in recording situations. However, this mic is absolutely wonderful for live sound reinforcement. The mic and the clip are as indestructible as they come.

I sold mine in favor of a Sennheiser MD421 or a Shure Beta 52 which are less tubby.

Ha! Tubby to me is more the sub lows like 75 and lower. or a severe build up in the 90-150 hz range. It is very thick sounding in the low mids but I don't mind subtracting a little there.

My 421 couldn't leave the studio quick enough for my tastes.LOL

    "Tubby" "Subby".

Goddamn, we need to define our terms.

The D112 sounds to me like a 'smiley face' mic. It emphasizes the lows (60-150Hz) and the high mids (2-5kHz) which is great for many sources.

I recorded the bass on the "Green Tiger" ASS thread with an AKG kick mic ..not the d112 but some older one that came out before it...and it blows my mind. I cant find the model # because half of the plastic housing is missing from it. All I know is it's cheap, small, black, and plastic, and that its an AKG kick mic.

Just looked it up - it was an AKG D550 designed "specifically for bass." .. sso nothing odd there, LOL.. I guess that makes my reply void.
